Continental's Extreme Contact DW (Dry & Wet) is a max performance summer tire developed for drivers who demand superior traction but require close to all-season performance in extreme conditions for their 2009 Nissan 370Z. Designed to deliver serious performance and good ride quality on both dry and wet roads, the ExtremeContact DW drips with German quality and craftsmanship and brings the driver ever closer to that autobahn experience.

Although it is designed to handle practically anything the weather can throw at it, the ExtremeContact DW is not recommended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures. The ExtremeContact DW features an asymmetric design with stable shoulder blocks and a continuous, notched intermediate rib on the outboard side to enhance responsiveness and cornering stability. To reduce noise, continuous center ribs are used in the tread. These ribs also provide constant rubber-to-road contact that is vital to controlling the longitudinal forces experienced under braking. A combination of wide circumferential tread grooves and notched shoulder blocks on the inboard shoulder help disperse water to enhance wet weather traction and hydroplaning resistance.

One of the unique features of the ExtremeContact DW are the Tuned Performance Indicators, a series of visible letters molded into the second rib from the outboard shoulder. These can be used to indicate to drivers the tire's performance levels. Seeing a "DW" indicates the tire has sufficient tread depth for dry and most wet road conditions. After the "W" has worn away, the remaining "D" alerts the driver that the tire has sufficient tread depth for dry conditions only.

Internally, the ExtremeContact's structure is also impressive, consisting of twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped jointless nylon cap plies. These structural elements reduce weight while providing long-term integrity under high speed conditions and more uniform ride quality. The ExtremeContact DW has a high tread wear rating of 340--comparable to some high-performance all-season tires. Sizes are limited, but nearly all of the stock sizes for the Z are available including 235/50R17 and 245/40R18. The Continental ExtremeContact DW is best suited for daily-driven Z's that see occasional spirited driving.

By minimizing distortion at high speeds and high temperatures, the Ventus S1 evo more than proves its durability in extreme conditions.

Hankook's Highly Dispersible Silica (HDS) compound is highlighted in this tire, and is molded into an attractive, sporty-looking asymmetric tread design. Continuous ribs in the tread reduce noise while increasing longitudinal stiffness--enhancing braking performance on dry roads. Large shoulder notches along with wide circumferential grooves help water flow through the tire's footprint to resist hydroplaning. The tire's internal structure is made up of two steel belts and reinforced by high-density, two-ply, spirally wound jointless nylon. In addition, a two-layer rayon body sandwiches a hard sidewall filler between the cord plies to aid in resisting distortion at high speeds as well as while cornering.

Available in many different sizes, the S1 evo offers hardcore Z enthusiasts a vast selection to shod their wheels with. From 225/40R17 to 295/25R20, there's a proper fitment for any possible wheel size you might choose. The Hankook Ventus S1 evo is an effective and affordable alternative to the more expensive offerings from European tire manufacturers.

Designed to achieve a balance between high speed stability and ultimate traction and comfort, the ADVAN Sport raises the bar for original equipment high-performance tires.

The tire's external structure consists of a hybrid silica tread compound which was specially formulated for the ADVAN Sport. The use of this compound results in a high level of grip and a tire that's less susceptible to extreme low or high temperatures. This compound is molded into a sporty-looking asymmetric tread pattern and features five main ribs including a substantial outer shoulder zone to blend handling with noise reduction and ride comfort. Four broad, circumferential grooves allow water to flow through the footprint, increasing resistance to hydroplaning.

On the inside, the ADVAN Sport is given a tire structure specifically designed to handle the stresses of aggressive cornering and offer high speed durability up to a ludicrous 186 mph (300 km/h). Spirally wound nylon cap plies reinforce the two wide steel belts to provide strength and consistent ride quality, while the sidewalls are made in such a way that they resist lateral deflection and provide predictable handling. The ADVAN Sport comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 205/50R17 to 295/25R20. Each ADVAN Sport carries a Z-rating, so you're covered if you decide to carry out an impromptu top speed test. The ADVAN Sport is an excellent summer tire that not only performs well, but also adds some JDM style to your Z.

Michelin's Pilot Sport PS2 picks up where the first Pilot Sport left off, delivering superior cornering ability and traction but with an asymmetric tread pattern for enhanced water shedding ability.

The tread pattern of the PS2 allows water to escape easily, maximizing the contact patch in wet conditions. Two different tread compounds make up the outside of the tire, including a hybrid silica/carbon black compound that spans from the tire's outer shoulder to the center tread as well as a high-silica compound used in the tire's inside shoulder. The large outer shoulder blocks and continuous intermediate and center ribs combined with the asymmetric tread pattern enhance steering response and cornering stability. Each tread compound was specially formulated for its specific location on the tire. Individually, these two compounds improve dry and wet traction, but combined they deliver high speed stability and crisp cornering.

Also highlighted in the tread design are the lateral notches and wide circumferential grooves that assist in channeling water through the footprint to improve wet traction. The PS2's internal structure is supported by two high-tensile, lightweight steel cord belts that are further reinforced by individual Aramid/nylon hybrid filaments to provide stiff sidewalls for better high-speed durability without sacrificing ride quality.

The Pilot Sport PS2 is available in many sizes, from 205/50R17 to 335/30R20. With a tread wear rating of 220, the PS2 won't be the longest lasting tire you've ever driven on. Although pricey, this tire offers best-in-class handling for the discerning Z enthusiast.

While low in price, it still provides outstanding grip, response and control in dry conditions as well as strong resistance to hydroplaning in the wet. Molded into the unique directional tread design is an advanced silica compound that reduces friction between the rubber molecules and dissipates heat more effectively.

A double-V directional tread pattern along with wide, solid shoulder blocks enhance wet performance. The tread compound and design work together to keep water from coming between the tire's contact patch and the road, improving wet grip while greatly reducing the chance for hydroplaning. Twin steel belts make up the Exclaim UHP's internal structure. The belts are reinforced by spirally wound nylon and topped with polyester body plies. This combination results in super-responsive handling, high cornering stability and high-speed durability. With a tread wear rating of 380, the Exclaim UHP should outlast many other ultra high performance tires while offering comparable performance. The Exclaim UHP's Z-speed rating will allow you to take your Z to speeds well past the double nickel without having to worry about your tires being up to snuff. With sizes ranging from 205/40R17 to 295/30R20, there's an Exclaim UHP for every wheel. Whether you decide to use them for spirited daily driving or the occasional autocross, these tires are excellent choices for the budget-minded enthusiast.

The 2009 Nissan 370Z is 2.7 inches shorter and 1.3 inches wider, and although the styling has something plainly in common with the previous (2008) model, almost every plane and contour is subtly or distinctly different. The wheelbase of this sixth-generation car is almost four inches shorter than the previous-generation 350Z, and all of the sheet metal is new. Nissan is calling the 370Z an all-new car, and it's hard to argue with that.

At the rear, the new lights combine with more-rounded contours to produce an elegant effect not unlike that of a Porsche. Altogether, we think the appearance is more subtle and mature than the somewhat squat aspects of the outgoing model.

There's still ample space in the seats for two occupants to travel in comfort, but the interior ambiance is now much improved by the new design and the choice of far more suitable textures.

Now enlarged to 3.7-liters, the V6 engine has plenty of power and a high operating speed. It's hooked to a six-speed manual with Nissan's interesting new SynchroRev system that matches revs for you on downshifts as long as the system is switched on at a button alongside the gear position indicator. The seven-speed automatic transmission does something very similar, blipping the throttle to match revs when you tug the paddle for a downshift.

By keeping the model variations to a minimum, but splitting the available options essentially between manual and automatic, basic and Touring, Nissan has broadened the appeal of its iconic Z-car in a meaningful way.

Model Lineup

The 2009 Nissan 370Z is offered in just two models: the 370Z ($29,930) and the 370Z Touring ($34,460). Currently, it's only available as a coupe.

The standard 370Z is well equipped, and includes the Nissan Intelligent Key with push-button start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a new non-intrusive cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in center console), dual overhead map lights and a AM/FM/CD/AUX four-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls. It comes with the standard six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters ($31,230).

The 370Z Touring model adds four-way power adjustable heated synthetic suede and leather-appointed sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, a 6CD Bose audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, XM Satellite Radio (XM subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth Handsfree Phone System, HomeLink Universal Transceiver and passenger seat map pocket. It comes with the standard six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters ($35,760).

Options are limited to a Sport package and a Navigation package. The Sport package ($3,000) adds 19-inch forged lightweight aluminum-alloy Rays wheels, fitted with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A high-performance radials. Spoilers are fitted fore and aft, and lower the car's drag coefficient from 0.29 to 0.28. Also included with the Sport package are higher-spec brakes with 14-inch front rotors and 13.8-inch rear rotors (versus 12.6/12.1-inch standard rotor sizes) with four-piston front and two-piston rear aluminum calipers. The chassis calibrations are otherwise the same as on the base car.

The Navigation package ($1,850), offers a GPS powered by a hard drive and featuring a touch-screen display. The system includes real-time traffic information from XM NavTraffic, which requires a paid subscription. Also bundled in this option is a 9.3 Gig Music Box hard drive and interface system for iPods and other MP3 players.

Safety features include dual-stage front airbags plus front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags for torso protection and side-curtain airbags for head protection. Active head restraints are also fitted, as are four-wheel tire pressure monitors. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control.

Walkaround

Now shorter and wider than before, the Nissan 370Z exhibits crisper contours and tighter surface tension on the panels. Front overhang is perhaps still a little long, but it is in the best interests of efficient aerodynamics and, besides, styling that emphasizes the rear-wheel-drive nature of the beast is an important part of the car's image.

Nissan chose to retain the vertical metallic exterior door handle, which is not our favorite feature because it's difficult to grasp, and to echo the rear quarter-window look first seen on the original 240Z. We think that little nod to history has been skillfully adapted. Attractive Z-badged turn signal markers fill the void between the front wheels and the front-door shut line, while vertical bars in the grille opening up front make the car look a little like a feeding manta ray.

The surface of the bodywork is comparatively devoid of bling. Nissan's hamburger logo graces the front end, and a shiny 370Z badge decorates the rump, but it's otherwise tastefully simple.

The Sport model gets Rays wheels with five artfully faceted split spokes, and look terrific peeking from the 370Z's muscular wheel wells. We've only seen the base car's wheels sitting apart from the car, but they don't look bad either.

At the rear, the dual exhaust outlets are tidily integrated with the rear fascia, and so is the rear spoiler when fitted as part of the Sport option. But we think more could have been made of the tail with a diffuser-like lower edge. See what you think.

Although it's not immediately obvious, one of the most telling aspects of the car's body is that the doors, rear hatch and hood are all made from aluminum, obviously in the quest for lower weight. Although the hood of the previous Z was aluminum, it used steel supports. Not in this one. Despite the added strength in the body, Nissan claims a 90-pound weight reduction.

Interior Features

The interior is hugely improved in this sixth generation Z-car, with much richer-looking materials and a design that escapes the low-rent effect of the old 350Z. A high-tech looking steering wheel (shared with the Maxima) is a bold centerpiece in the dash, a large Z gleaming in its center boss. The wheel was skimmed to produce differing thicknesses around its circumference, and tightly clad in solid and perforated leather at the appropriate segments. Buttons stud the beefy spokes for close-at-hand control of the stereo and cruise control.

The instrument panel still moves with the adjustable steering column, and still has a passing resemblance to a motorcycle gauge cluster, but the gauges are large and clear, with a 9000-rpm tachometer sitting dead center. A 180-mph speedometer is set off to the right, and a rather unusual aluminum circle at left contains two rows of LEDs for temperature and fuel level indication.

Naturally, the three auxiliary gauges that have always graced the Z-car's dash top are there, providing the time, oil temperature and battery state of charge. The seats in the new 370Z are larger and more supportive than before, and are of slightly different design right to left. Fittingly, the driver gets more aggressive bolsters than does the passenger.

The inconvenient shock-tower support bar that seriously compromised luggage space in the old car went the way of the shortened midsection, and there is now a cross-car bar directly behind the front seats, where it performs more of a locating role than an obstructive one. Rear luggage space is quite decent now, and the rear hatch provides unimpeded access. The big rear B-pillars produce distinct blind spots, but can be worked around quite well by positioning the large outside mirrors to compensate.

On automatic-transmission equipped cars, alloy shift paddles sprout from the steering column, their rear faces coated with a matt texture for positive finger actuation. In cars with the navigation system, the screen is tidily integrated into the center console, the usual Nissan ATM-like keyboard neatly incorporated at its base.

Along with the improved aesthetics comes rational layout and control function. Operating the stereo system is straightforward, and learning the navigation functions did not require any reference to the manual. The standard four-speaker stereo produces pretty good quality sound, so we expect exceptional performance from the 240-watt Bose unit found in the Touring model, with its six speakers and dual subwoofers though we haven't listened to it.

Access to the car, as with many sport coupes, is a little more difficult than with your average SUV, but the doors open fully and the sills are not unduly wide. For those inclined toward sportier cars, the new interior now compares favorably with cars costing a lot more.

Driving Impressions

The previous 350Z was fun to drive, but this new 370Z is a revelation. Where the 350Z was somewhat truck-like and crude in certain circumstances, this one is much better integrated. One can better appreciate a cohesive sense of control from the wheel, the pedals and the levers. The control relationships just seem better networked, all on the same page.

With the shortened body came increases in torsional rigidity at both ends of the car, and this solidity concentrates the feeling of agreement from all parts of the chassis. It now feels agile rather than brutal, supple rather than rigid, and it is easier to drive as a result.

We only had the Sport model to try out at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park in Nevada, and the car took to the course as if to the manor born. Since the 370Z uses a much-modified version of Nissan's FM platform, we expected some of the tail-happiness we've seen in cars using that chassis. But while we could occasionally provoke a spot of tail-wagging by adding too much power at corner exits, or by turning hard on a trailing throttle, the transition was progressive and easy to read.

For those not practiced at the art of double-clutching and heel-and-toeing, Nissan's SynchroRev system helps out enormously by blipping the throttle on downshifts to match engine speed with rear-axle speed for smooth synchronization.

Unlike true double-clutching, SynchroRev does not first select neutral then rev the engine to the required speed, so the synchronizers are still called upon to help out. You can feel the sensation through the shift lever as the synchros clutch in, and the purists among us would still prefer to do our own legwork. But there's no denying that it's a brilliant idea for most people, and even for purists on occasion.

Nissan's VVEL variable-valve timing systems has endowed the 370Z with a very broad torque spread, so forays to the 7500-rpm redline are not often needed. But when you do venture there, the famous high-rpm hullabaloo and clutch growl we know so well from the VQ-engine series turns back up. But it's hardly there at all at lower engine speeds, and that's another sign of the car's improved manners.

With steering that is weighted just about perfectly for a sportscar, the 370Z steers with great precision, turns in decisively, and will tighten the line even at high lateral-g loadings. There's simply more grip than you first think. And the big brakes as fitted to Sport models work as well as advertised.

Apart from some tire roar on rough surface textures, the ride is surprisingly calm and quiet on the public road for such a close-focused sportscar. The 370Z will undoubtedly make a fine grand tourer, particularly with the standard 18-inch wheels and tires.

Summary

Improving technology lends a broad operating range to the new Nissan 370Z in every aspect, making it a usable everyday commuter as well as a fun track day car, but the Sport package is nonetheless aimed directly at enthusiasts. As is the unmistakable visual signature. Here's a car that really looks like it's doing 100 mph while parked. Yet its civilized character and affordable price will likely attract one-car singles for all-around motoring activities.

Some people have got it and love it. Some people don't have it but know they love it or hate it. You tell us. Did you get a 370Z, or did you stay loyal to the Z33. Greatest S/Z chassis ever, or a terrible mistake? What are your impressions after a handful of months since the 370Z was relaeased?

The all-new, second generation NISMO 370Z, which is set to go on sale at Nissan retailers nationwide in June 2009, continues the tradition of the original by offering unique performance and design attributes that true sports car enthusiasts are looking for - straight from the factory. Like the limited production NISMO 350Z introduced two years earlier, the new NISMO 370Z is a tuner-Z® enthusiast's dream, featuring a 350-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a specially tuned suspension and special super-lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels.

The 2009 NISMO 370Z was developed by NNA's Specialty Vehicles Group in conjunction with Autech Japan, Nissan's longstanding conversion partner.

"The NISMO name is known throughout the world as the leading supplier of race-bred, factory-tuned, extreme performance Nissan parts, accessories and vehicles," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA). "The new, second-generation NISMO Z® proudly - and deservedly - wears the NISMO badge, carrying on the tradition of bringing racing-inspired performance and engineering to the street."

The all-new NISMO 370Z is offered in one completely equipped model (no options) with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission only.

Dynamic Performance And Handling Comes Standard

The new NISMO 370Z starts with the unmatched foundation of an advanced Nissan FM (Front Midship) platform, refined 4-wheel independent suspension and 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL). The VVEL system helps optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time. For its use in the NISMO 370Z, the 3.7-liter VQ-series V6 produces 350 hp @ 7,400 rpm and 276 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm. The NISMO Z®'s enhanced engine power and acceleration is provided through use of an exclusive H-configured exhaust system design and muffler tuning, along with optimized ECM (Engine Computer Module) control.

The NISMO 370Z is offered only with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission with Nissan's new "SynchroRev Match" function, the world's first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission system. The "SynchroRev Match" function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the speed of the next gear position, essentially "blipping" the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical "shock" when the clutch is engaged. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less vehicle intervention.

The NISMO 370Z features a tight, rigid body structure with a strut tower bar brace and a pair of performance dampers, which quickly and efficiently react to and control body vibrations from road input via the tires, contributing to the NISMO 370Z's outstanding stability and performance feel.

The NISMO Z®'s double-wishbone front/4-link rear suspension design suspension is specially tuned for exceptional stability and handling. Compared to a standard Nissan 370Z Coupe, front spring rates have been dialed up 15%, rear spring rates 10%, front stabilizer bar rate upped 15% and the rear stabilizer bar is 50% stiffer. The roll stiffness rate has been increased by 15% and front and rear damping factors have been increased by 40% and 140% respectively.

The NISMO 370Z rides on unique 5-spoke Nissan-branded 19-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels (19x9.5-inch front, 19x10.5-inch rear) mounted with Yokohama ADVAN Sport Y-rated high-performance tires (P245/40ZR19 front, P285/35ZR19 rear).

Bringing the NISMO 370Z to a stop are standard NISMO Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear vented rotors with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers. The braking system also includes a variable ratio brake pedal for a more direct pedal stroke feel, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). A Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD) is standard on all NISMO 370Zs, along with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).

Responsive steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion design that has been reworked (versus the NISMO 350Z design) with redesigned mounting bushings and a column insulator to provide improved response. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced with the use of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load.

Unique NISMO 370Z Exterior and Interior

Along with its standout performance, the new NISMO Z® offers a standout appearance inside and out. The functional and fully integrated aerodynamic body pieces include an extended front nose design with a canard design at each corner for improved downforce and a fully integrated chin spoiler. The NISMO 370Z has an overall length of 174.3 inches.

Special side sills and a unique rear bumper help control airflow under the vehicle, while the functional rear spoiler increases downforce. The NISMO 370Z exterior also includes a wide stance, sculptural fenders, upswept quarter windows, bold "boomerang" shaped headlights and taillights, vertical door handles and aluminum hood, door panels and hatchback. The headlights are a High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon design with an auto on/off feature.

"One look at the dramatic NISMO 370Z body and you know that this isn't your everyday sports car," said Castignetti. "The styling is highly emotional yet totally functional - expressing dynamic movement while enhancing airflow and downforce for enhanced aerodynamic performance."

The NISMO 370Z is offered in five exterior colors: Pearl White, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Black, Solid Red and Platinum Graphite.

The NISMO 370Z's driver-centric interior includes NISMO logo seats with black and red fabric and red stitching, a NISMO tachometer, steering wheel with smooth leather and red parallel stitching, smooth leather-wrapped shift knob and aluminum trimmed pedals. A special serialized plaque of authenticity, located on the vertical panel above the floor-mounted console, is matched to each NISMO Z®, identifying its unique serial and model year designation.

The NISMO 370Z's 2-seat interior layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger's seat. In the rear is an open cargo area with enhanced storage and accessibility. The instrument panel includes a 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer include an "initial sweep" function, coming alive when the NISMO Z? is first started.

Both the driver and passenger's seats are structured with an anti-slip material in the main seating surface. The sporty woven cloth seats feature standard 8-way driver's/4-way passenger manual adjustments. Adjustable front seat Active Head Restraints are standard.

Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a new non-intrusive cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in center console), dual overhead map lights and a AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

"The NISMO logo is prominent throughout the cabin, reinforcing the mission and special capability of the vehicle," said Castignetti. "The NISMO Z® is the complete package - inside, outside and under the skin."

The NISMO Z's long list of standard safety and security features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; roof-mounted side-impact air bags; seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The 370Z Roadster's most obvious departure from the 370Z Coupe is its convertible top. The soft-top roof was designed with an emphasis on three key areas: to provide a sleek silhouette matching the new Z®'s stunning styling with the top up or down, to offer easy single-action open-close operation, and to provide an enjoyable top-down experience with reduced wind turbulence and all-climate driver/passenger comfort.

With convertible top in the closed position, the design provides a sophisticated sloped-back appearance, the perfect balance between the soft top and the Z® body design. The shortened windshield and aerodynamically rounded rear deck enhance the Z®'s kinetic and dynamic character lines. When in the down position, the convertible top is concealed beneath a full body-color hard tonneau cover, which extends forward to help create the Z® Roadster's classic "double cockpit" style interior.

The standard black cloth convertible top features a fabric inner liner, which provides a quality appearance and helps reduce noise intrusion into the cabin, along with an enlarged (versus the previous generation Z® Roadster) glass rear window with an integrated electric rear window defroster. The top operation takes approximately 20 seconds start-to-finish and is controlled by either a center console-mounted switch or by a button located on the doors. The automatic latch system secures the top to - or releases it from - the windshield header without driver intervention. The shape and position of the glass wind deflector, located between the fixed headrest bars, has been optimized to reduce turbulence into the cabin.

Like the new 370Z Coupe, the Z® Roadster's new exterior is more aggressive in appearance and lighter and tighter in structure than the previous generation. The wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches) and overall length is reduced by 2.6 inches (167.2 inches versus 169.8 inches). The new Z® Roadster features an aluminum hood, door panels and trunk for reduced weight. At the same time, the body structure was extensively revised, improving rigidity and stability. The 370Z Roadster includes additional structural reinforcement (over the 370Z Coupe), including in the A-pillars and side sills.

The Z® Roadster's exterior design incorporates the look and feel of the new Z® Coupe, including its signature long nose/short cockpit proportions, vertical door handles and distinctive new headlight/taillight treatment, which features a fierce "boomerang" shape. High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are standard.

The 370Z Roadster is offered in seven exterior colors: Solid Red, Magnetic Black, Brilliant Silver, Platinum Graphite, Pearl White, Monterey Blue and a special premium color, Black Cherry.

Inside the stunning exterior, true to its sports car heritage, the Z® Roadster's interior is completely driver-centric, with its three-layer design grouping items by how a driver sees information, operates the controls and is held in place - so drivers feel completely connected and engaged whenever and wherever they drive, top up or down.

The Z® Roadster features high back black woven "Carbon" cloth seats with 8-way manual driver's/4-way manual passenger's seat adjustments. Touring models include unique leather-appointed "net" seats with 4-way power/4-way manual operation on the driver's seat (4-way power on the passenger's seat). These second-generation net seats are exclusive to the Z® Roadster and have integrated heating and cooling functions - ideal for open air driving no matter what the outside temperature. Adjustable front seat Active Head Restraints are also standard.

The Z® Roadster's 2-seat layout includes a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger's seat. The instrument panel retains the traditional Z® 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer now include an "initial sweep" function, coming alive when the car is first started.

The sporty steering wheel is a new "oval" 3-spoke design, which offers baseball-style stitching, improved thumb grips and palm rest areas for improved feel on long drives. The surface of the leather-wrapped wheel is "shaved" to provide a more kidney-like shape to better fit in the hand. The manual transmission shifter is specially padded to improve the accuracy of diagonal shifts and to feel softer in the hand for forward and backward motions.

Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Ignition, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature and a center console box with a non-intrusive cover design.

Other features include automatic climate control, two 12-volt power outlets, three cupholders (two in door panels, one in center console) and an AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

The Touring model adds a 6CD Bose® audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, XM™ Satellite Radio (XM™ subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, HomeLink™ Universal Transceiver and aluminum-trimmed pedals. This is the first time Bluetooth® and XM™ satellite radio have been available on a Z® Convertible.

The optional Navigation Package includes the touch-screen Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with XM NavTraffic™ real-time traffic information (XM™ subscription required, sold separately), 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback and a USB fort for iPod® connectivity. The new navigation system offers a number of enhancements (versus previous Nissan Navigation System designs), including four times higher screen resolution, wireless music player audio streaming capability (via Bluetooth®), on-board Zagat restaurant ratings database, an in-dash DVD player and XM NavWeather™ weather information display (XM™ subscription required, sold separately).

The 370Z Roadster interior is available in Black cloth or for 370Z Touring Roadster models, a choice of Gray, Black or Wine leather-appointed net seating.

Open Air, Open Roads - An Unbeatable Combination

Roadster or Coupe, the new Z®s share one of the most advanced drivetrains available for affordable sports cars today. The Z® Roadster's long list of cutting edge performance-focused technologies includes a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL), choice of 7-speed automatic transmission or close-ratio 6-speed manual with available "SynchroRev Match" (the world's first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission), refined 4-wheel independent suspension and 4-wheel vented disc brakes (with available Nissan Sport Brakes).

"The new 370Z Roadster lives in the same sweet spot of performance, style and value that the Z® Coupe does," said Castignetti. "Open air driving just begs for open roads and the new 370Z Convertible is the perfect companion."

Compared to the previous generation 350Z Roadster, the new Z® convertible picks up 26 horsepower and 2 lb-ft of torque (332 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm, compared with the previous 3.5-liter V6's 306 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm and 268 lb-ft of toque @ 4,800 rpm).

Along with its larger displacement, the 3.7-liter engine gives better power delivery all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque, creating an entirely new driving experience. Key to the enhanced performance is the VVEL system, which is able to optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time. Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool.

The 2010 Z® Roadster is offered with a choice of two new advanced transmissions - a close-ratio 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic. The 6-speed manual is available with SynchroRev Match™ (included in the optional Sport Package), which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gear shift performance. The SynchroRev Match™ function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially "blipping" the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical "shock" when the clutch is engaged. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less vehicle intervention.

The available 7-speed automatic includes Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode.

Drivers can use the standard paddle shifters or the shift lever. The 7-speed's wide gear ratios offer improved fuel efficiency, while the Adaptive Shift Control is designed to adjust to the driver's driving style.

Estimated fuel economy for the 370Z Roadster is 18 mpg City/25 mpg Highway for both the 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions - increases of 1 mpg City/2 mpg Highway for the automatic and 1 mpg City/1 mpg Highway for the manual transmission versus the 2009 350Z Roadster.

The Z® Roadster also utilizes the Z® Coupe's advanced 4-wheel independent suspension. The double-wishbone front suspension (which replaces the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses lighter forged aluminum arms and a lightweight rigid aluminum-alloy cradle, along with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio. The 4-link rear suspension is also stiffer and lighter, with the rear cradle entirely integrated into a single part. "High response" shock absorbers are utilized on each corner for improved ride comfort.

The standard 370Z Roadster wheel and tire package features 18x8.0-inch front/18x9.0-inch lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A summer tires. Available as part of the optional Sport Package are 19-inch RAYS forged lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A P245/40R19 front/P275/35R19 tires.

The Z®'s standard 4-wheel vented disc brake system includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The optional Sport Package includes Nissan Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors (versus 12.6-inch front/rear standard rotors) with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers.

Steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion design. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced with the addition of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load. A Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is standard.

The Nissan 370Z Roadster's list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; door-mounted curtain air bags; and seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters.

Other standard equipment includes Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Two Well-Equipped Models
The new Z® Roaster is offered in two well-equipped models - 370Z Roadster and the 370Z Touring Roadster. The Touring model includes the heated and cooling leather-appointed power net seats, HomeLink™ Universal Transceiver, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, 8-speaker Bose® audio system, XM™ Satellite Radio (XM™ subscription, sold separately) and aluminum-trimmed pedals.

Only two option packages are offered (Touring model only): the Sport Package, with 19-inch RAYS forged wheels and Bridgestone Potenza tires, Nissan Sport Brakes, SynchroRev Match (6-speed manual transmission only) and Viscous Limited Slip Differential; and the Navigation Package, with Hard Drive-based Nissan Navigation System, 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive and USB connectivity.

The new 2009 Nissan 370Z dots the road more and more these days. On the surface, Nissan's latest Z chassis has a lot in common with its big "sister", the Nissan 350Z, though the new Fair Lady is shorter and wider. You also see little gestures that are a throwback to its roots, the rear window even beckons back to the 1970 Nissan 240Z.

The new 370Z is and will be compared with numerous other conventional sports cars, perhaps none more than a Porsche. The physical similarities are hard to argue, especially around the rear of the car where the lights look more like a Porsche than the 350Z did.

Sports car enthusiasts are pleased that it is still a two-person vehicle, with room to travel in plenty of comfort. And the power and speed factors are more than adequately catered for, as we have come to expect from a Nissan Z chassis. The convenience of the drive is assured by the new SynchroRev system; you will never need to over-rev again.

Model Lineup

None of this messing about with a different model for every letter of the alphabet, the 2009 Nissan 370Z is available in two models: Base and Touring. The Z34 Touring is a little over $4,500 more expensive than the Base model, but one can argue the value of some nice extra features such as a 6 CD audio system with eight speakers and heated leather seats.

Two add-ons packages may go some way to slaking your thirst for difference: Sport and Navigation. The 2009 Nissan 370Z Sport package will require $3,000 extra and will repay you with lightweight alloys, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A radials, rear and front spoilers and higher-spec brakes. The 370Z Navigation package requires a more modest $1,800, which pays for a GPS that will update constantly with downloaded traffic news, as well as an interface system for your iPod. And to keep you safe, there are front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.

Walk Around

So you know it will keep you safe, but this is a Nissan Fair Lady -- a car that is beloved for its look and feel. The first word that comes to mind is "compact"; no inch of space is wasted. Nissan kept the vertical exterior door handle, which is not welcome news to some who found it awfully difficult to grasp in the past. And that 240Z Nissan S30 chassis cue we spoke of earlier: a quarter-window at the back, a look that has not aged badly into the new millenium.

Unlike some of the new cars coming on to the market, the new 2009 Nissan 370Z does not show a conscious effort to "bling" it up: the classic Nissan logo on the front, the model number on the back in chrome, and that's it. The lack of excess is a statement in and of itself, as long as the beast under the bonnet has some bite. The doors, hood, and rear hatch are all aluminum where they once were steel, shaving off 90 pounds.

Interior Features

In previous Nissan Z incarnations, the interior could be described as cold and plastic. Comparatively, this sixth generation could be described as one of class: tasteful leather on the seats and steering wheel, handy buttons for the stereo and cruise control, and handy gear shift flippers if you go with the automatic. The display is large and readable without being too bulky, temperature and fuel signaled by a row of LED's. The three usual auxiliary gauges are there too, signaling time, oil temperature, and battery charge.

The seats in the new 370Z are bigger with better support calibrated for passenger and driver - and some critics say they look better than those of the 350Z. The Navigation package GPS is integrated into the dash, and many feel that it is very user-friendly. The interior features, much like the exterior and performance, is being advertised as the kind of details you normally pay much more for..

Driving Impressions

When the 350Z came out, many complained that it was a little crude and clumsy, and the hope was that things would improve. They have. The new Nissan 370Z exhibits the improvements every make loyalist hopes for in model progression; features seem better integrated in the Z34, the wheel, pedals, and levers know what each other are doing. In connection with the shorter, tighter body, it is all a whole lot easier to drive.

The 370Z is a car that wants to be driven. Nissan even fitted the new car with the SynchroRev system, the clutch's promise to behave -- though it may not be what traditionalists would choose.

"Smooth" is another word that is hard to avoid when discussing the 370Z. Not just "compact", it is just so apposite. Unless you try to get the rev counter over its 7,500 rpm redline, it will never growl back at you. The 2009 Nissan 370Z is being lauded for its versatility: great for throwing around corners on a sports track, while at the same time being controlled and genteel enough for the commute to work. It is a car for the sports car fan - no two-seater should be otherwise - with a broader range than its predecessors.

However, the budget-minded auto enthusiast has known that this is the car to watch as dealers ponder how to move unsold brand new 350Z's off crowded lots. Well, to you dedicated few we are pleased to say that your patience has paid off. Right now you can get an incredible four-digit rebate on any 2008 350Z or get financing as low as 1.9% APR for up to 60 months.

With its 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and sport-tuned suspension, the 350Z is still a force to be reckoned with both on the street and at the track. On top of being an already capable platform to build upon, the 350Z's 5-year production run means that there has been plenty of time for companies to develop go-fast parts for this tuner favorite. While it may be the outgoing model, the aftermarket support available along with its inherent high-performance nature give this car tons of potential. Whoever said there's no such thing as a cheap sports car?

We asked recently whether you would be interested in getting a 370z. Now we wonder if you would consider getting an '08 350z considering the rebates and low APR involved. Is it worth getting last year's Fair Lady, in a discontinued chassis, at this particular discount? Is it actually more worth it to pay a little extra for the new 370z that offers better performance in a Z34, which should last for several more years?

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is not well-known for its flashiness, perhaps preferring to be lauded for its differences - the obvious one being its rotary-powered "renesis" engine, which was designed to reduce exhaust emissions while producing greater power. Already considered a performance alternative, does it have a chance against the well-received new 2009 Nissan 370Z?

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is more suitable as a family car than the 2009 Nissan 370Z two-seater could ever dream of being. The RX-8 has a surprisingly spacious interior for a sports coupe. However, a family-owned RX-8 will feel fluctuating fuel prices acutely. Only equal to the 370Z in the city and even less economical on the freeway, one could argue that the Z34 Fair Lady is a better car for those looking to economize.

As a straight muscle car, the 2009 Nissan 370Z has the 2009 Mazda RX-8 over a barrel, dwarfing the rotary engine's horsepower capability by 100 bhp. An RX-8 offers spaciousness and the kinship of die-hard rotary drivers, but at a relatively similar MSRP as the 370Z it would be hard to choose the slower "renesis" over the cat quick V6.

Nissan takes two swipes at the sports coupe market in 2009 with the 2009 Nissan 370Z and the 2009 Infiniti G37; the former has just started to dot the streets but the latter has been on the market for a couple of years.

Both coupes sport a 3.7L, V6 engine and are being dubbed as "brawlers" with a real edge to their performance. The 2009 Infiniti G37 carries marginally less brake horsepower than the 2009 Nissan 370Z: 332 to 330 bhp. The G37 is narrower, taller, and longer than its rival, 112.2 inches, fully a foot more than the 370Z. This should translate to the Nissan being more powerful with speedier acceleration. The Fair Lady and the G Coupe come with a 7-speed automatic gearbox standard with a 6-speed manual option.

The dimensions may play a big role in your decision aside from power and price. Do you want the sleeker, theoretically more elegant Infiniti or the Nissan that is shorter, punchier, and more powerful?
