Annoying, but I have noticed this in all three of the cars.
I don't think I have ever owned a car in decades that this wasn't the case. It seems the 1st quarter always goes slow and the last fast. Some stay on empty way longer than others before actually going dry though.

Except for newer cars with digital fuel gauge systems (like the Z), all cars are like that.

Conventional auto fuel gauges are NOT linear.

Since I could remember, I've never been able to get my gauge to say full tank. Even after spilling gas from over filling. I get the empty light but I know there has to be more gas in there. The most amount that I ever put in the Z was 14.5 gallons.

At max I get 275 miles out of a tank. WTF?

welcome to the Nissan 350Z! This is just one of MANY wonderful Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issues that we face everyday as owners of 350Z cars!

Well, you're getting about 19 MPG (275/14.5). Pretty normal.

If the most you put in is 14.5 gllons, you're obviously filling up while you still have about 5.5 gallons left.

I fill up at 400 miles, and I put in about 18-18.5 gallons.

I'm sure I still have gas, but at 275 miles I have about 25 miles on the DTE light. I've taken it past to where it doesn't say any miles but it's not worth the risk. You never know.

If you just fill the tank 1) when the light comes on, and next time 2) when the dashed lines start blinkng, you WILL know

My light comes on when I'm down to 4 gallons, (approx 85 actual miles remaining) and the computer starts blinking dashes when I have 2 gallons (approx 40 actual miles) left.

I now fill up at 400 miles, and it usually takes 18-18.5 gallons. That means I still have 30- 40 miles of "reserve".

When my computer reads " -*-" I know I still have about 1.5-2 gallons left until I'm s o l. So there is a analog guage, a warning light, a digital warning count down, and then still a reserve. If I ever run empty, I'll know that I have dementia.

I'm gonna have to have it serviced. I spill gas after pumping more that 14 gallons.

I drive till there is no numbers in the DTE "----". I do that for 25-30 miles but It's kinda freaky and annoying. Fill up and still can only get 14.5 gallons. When i fill up so much it spills my gauge analog reads 3/4 tank.

Jes-Z, definitely sounds like you just need to take it to the dealer then. Fill it up before you go, hand the service manager $10 and say, "hey go fill it up and see what happens!"

I had something replaced in my tank, because I couldnt put more then 10 gallons of gas. 12 if I pushed it before it spilled out. Only got about 200 Miles to a tank. Found out it was a Air ByPass Valve or something in the tank. When they replaced it they messed pinched a hose to tell me the correct reading of fuel. Found out the hard way when I ran out of Gas on the Way home from the Auto Show here in NY. Brought the car back and they repaired that as well. I can now fill up my tank to 18.5 Gallons. Never anymore then that. Even at that my gauge still doesnt read Full, its a little less then a quarter of Full. I havent seen how many actual miles I get to a full tank as this will be my first fill up (filled up yesterday). I'm hoping like everyone keeps telling me that I get atleast 300 Miles to the tank. Although my DTE says 250. I dont think thats accurate.

When I picked up my car yesterday from the dealer (after there service fixed my gauge). The tank was empty it showed the fuel light on. However the DTE Said I had 85 Miles left until empty. This gauge is really quite confusing.

Knowing my dealer, he'll take the 10 bucks, do some burnouts, go buy himself lunch, give me the car back and tell me there's nothing wrong with it. lol

Well, what they replaced in my tank wasnt it. It happened again. The car has now been at Smithtown Nissan for the past 4 days. The Manager tells me they cant figure out what it is. So they called Nissan Support something from what he told me.

Here is what he told me....

The car has Dual Sump Gas tanks. And the problem is that the right tank is not pulling from the left tank, and not feeding the left tank. Therefore you can only fill up on 12-14 Gallons, before it spits out at you. Thats why my reading is inaccurate. So as it turns out there replacing the entire tank and fuel pump. I'm driving a Nissan Versa as a loaner, god I miss my car..... Hopefully I find out today whether that fixed it or not.

I ended up running out of gas 4 times because of the inaccurate readings, not very happy about that. It's quite embaressing if you know what I mean.

I've noticed this on my 07. I filled her up, ran it down till the low fuel light came on, said I had 39 miles left. It took 16 gallons to fill it back up. So the Z has a 4 gallon reserve? I calculated a 22 MPG average so technically I should have had 88 miles left. hmmm, better having more than less left I guess
