Good news, bad news
First, the bad news: A 30-year dynasty of straight six-engined sports cars seems to
be on its last legs at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.
It began with the 1970 240Z and has survived in Japan in the form of the
race-winning, record-setting, all-wheel drive Skyline GTR. Since the launch of the
300ZX in 1984, Z-cars have had V6 engines.
Although few Skyline GTRs have ever been seen outside Japan, they are a global
legend among performance driving enthusiasts. However, sources say this situation
will change when Skyline's potent 2.6-litre twin turbo engine is taken out of
production within the next few years.
Now the good news: This opens the door to an entirely new V6 Skyline with the
potential for overseas sales, possibly in North America. Supporting this notion, a
new-generation Skyline concept car was prominently displayed at the auto show in
Detroit earlier this year.
NISMO goes faster
A Japanese automaker is considering revving up its cars by launching an entire new
range of "tuner" sports and performance parts in North America.
The "go-faster" parts and accessories would come from NISMO, the performance and
motorsports subsidiary of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. In the past, NISMO has supported
successful racing projects all the way up to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Nissan's North
American subsidiaries have been largely absent from tuning, racing and rallying
their production models for close to two decades.
But don't expect a racing version of Nissan's new 350Z. Ian Forsyth, director of
marketing for Nissan Canada Inc., says he knows of no plans for the new Z-car to be
developed for racing.

Yeah, but Nissan Canada Inc. doesn't know a thing about what Nissan North America does. Like the special preorder packet!
