Transmission and the clutch question
If someone replaced their transmission, would the clutch normally get replaced along with it? And if a transmission was replaced at 40k miles, is that a red flag about the rest of the car? Car currently has 70k miles on the new transmission. (Looking to buy it)
Thanks for the help!

make sure you get the slave and master cylinders from z1. You will have to replace both of these at about 10k with new jwt clutch flywheel combo. I know I just recently had to change mine after upgraded my clutch 15k miles ago.

If they're cheap or if the dealership replaced the tranny, they might not have replaced the clutch. However, it is recommend since you're going to be in there anyway.
A replaced tranny doesn't mean the rest of the car is bad, some cars have bad synchros and weird issues.

why would you have to replace both at 10k? did you mean 100k miles?
you can do one of the cylinders without dropping the tranny. I think it was the master cylinder. but one of them is in or near the transmission.

The OP is considering buying a Z and a factory tranny replacement usually DOES NOT include a full clutch or flywheel change. For '03-06 models, the clutch slave is external, while the '07-08 Zs have internal slaves (which require pulling the tranny). There's no need to replace either the slave or the clutch master unless there's a problem and many of us have over 100K miles on these components without any problems. .

No I meant 10k miles. Jwt clutch flywheel combo is much stronger than stock and with the weak oem slave and master they will go bad much faster. Mine lasted 15k miles and I didn't beat on the clutch really hard either. You will feel the clutch pedal get soft around 10k miles. If op is getting new trans from dealer then I would have them put in oem clutch and flywheel while they are in there.

I replaced my transmission at 36K under Nissan’s drive-train warranty. My problem exhibited as grinding when downshifting from 5th to 6th gear. The new transmission was much better in every way.
The dealer recommended replacing the clutch components. I declined. I now have 90k, and no problems with the clutch. --Spike

Guess I am lucky - I have 144,000 on my '03 with the original tranny AND clutch. Get an occasional brief grind going into 5th so if that continues or gets worse, I'll replace both tranny and clutch at the same time. But for the OP, I think he is wondering if the clutch was replaced when the current owner had the tranny replaced. And as noted, no way to really tell unless there are receipts for the work.

I'm easy on mine in daily driving but after 11 trips to the Dragon and about an equal number of track days, not including some rather spirited runs with my club every summer. not all of those 144,000 miles have been taking it easy lol. I have rev-matched since day one though for both DD and spirited driving, and I don't ordinarily use the clutch as a "brake" except on the track or those spirited drives.
