can a turbo kit be a waste of money?

We are driving some of the least practical cars on the road. The only difference between My 2 door 2 seater with 287 hp at the crank and someone else's midlife crisis with 700 hp is purely subjective. Do I want 700 hp? Hell yes. Who wouldn't? Do I need 700 hp? No, but I also don't need a 2 seater sports car.
You dont need anythign but 1000 calories a day, fire for when it's below freezing and water every 48 hours. So........
where's this convo going.......

OP, when people say, "you wont be able to use all the power on the streets", I can relate as a few seconds hitting it WOT at the top of third and you are already in 110-120 range. Finding the right tire/suspension setup it can feel pretty gnarly in 2-3rd. I've had to tinker with my setup. 500whp felt amazing and was enough to beat most anything stock on the road. Only downside, IMO, to raising HP isnt the usability of it, just the drivability given needed clutch and gas.
That being said, it has not been a waste of money for me.

My Turbo 350z(low 300's whp) which runs a high 12 feels much slower than my friend s4 running a 13.3 and my friends stock 2010 wrx which runs a mid 13? The pull is much different from an AWD car.
Once you get to the 550hp/tq then that's scary. My buddies gt500 makes 560hp/tq at 2500rpms...it feels like I'm on my gixxer 750

It's all in the gear ratios(the awd is just a different pull altogether). I've been in a 1970 Chevelle 396SS and he had VERY VERY low gears. It felt like an 12 sec car. So we went to the track and I was driving an 02 vette. We lined up and he pulled hard..HARD off the line and I was like "holy shiet" about 1/8mile mark I flew past him running a high 13. He ran something like a mid 15

It's all about wants and needs.
Maybe no one needs a 400hp yet, nothing at all wrong with wanting or making more hp.
There are few streets that more than 600 hp could be applied, successfully to. SO WHAT. I old NMCA days, 1990's, I had a street driven, stock suspension car on a 9in wide tire that ran 9.00@149. I put down 978 to the rear tire. On the street you could not drive it on a stock tire and on slicks it would not hook well, with very light throttle it would. Did I need that much hp nope. But, I was a blast and yes I drive it to the store, to visit friends, and to the track. It was a blast. Now the twin turbo Mustang I drove it also just not as far or often. It had a 427 W/Ford with twins, 7.78@181. Did I need that much hp... YES! BWWHAHAHA!
It's your car and money, do what you want!

their are other things in this world that are even more useless than a turbo kit, a college degree nowadays is completely worthless..atleast turbo kits offer a long lasting adrenaline rush
