Default Questions about de

Recently I found out that my 04 350z will need a new engine due to antifreeze getting inside of it, so now I'm looking to buy a used engine. My question is does the date really matter when the engine was made? The places iv'e called ask something like if it was made before or after 10/3. From what iv'e seen the 04s have the vq35de non rev so does the date really matter when looking for a non revup?

03 to 05 - vq35de
05 anniversary edition and 06 - vq35de revup
07 and 08 - vq35hr

The standard DE is pretty common. Shouldn't be to hard finding one. Check ebay

How did antifreeze get into it (if you don't mind my asking)?

Sorry for the expense, hope you get it running again soon.

Honestly I'm not sure, blown head gasket maybe. I went to change the oil on it and it was this weird milky color and sorta clumpy.I was driving back to my home town and the throw out bearing started making a noise so I went to downshift into 5th and when I pushed the clutch in the car died from dropping revs, so I popped the clutch in to start and the only time the car would die was from pressing the clutch. Once I got it to stop antifreeze started coming out from the reservoir, after letting it cool down it didn't want to start. I found out from people around town and the previous owner himself that he had it cammed, heads, different rearend, gears so the engine had plenty of abuse with 158k miles on it

Besides the throw out bearing rattling, nothing seemed too different. If I was driving a long distance the car would shutoff if I went to use the clutch at normal speed, revs would just drop. The car would never over heat till the last time everything went bad.

The throw-out bearing would not have anything to do with internal engine failure.

Your engine went bad due to a warped head and gasket failure. It’s likely the previous owner abused your car since this (warped head) is an unusual problem with Nissan and the 350z.

Lol I know it wasn't the throw out bearing. I've only had the car since march and its probably been parked more then driven from me having to do repairs, lol I did get the car really cheap so I shouldn't expect so much from it

I spent a couple months last year contacting every re-seller/junkyard in my state looking for an 03-05 DE motor. As long as its not a rev-up ('05 to '06) you'll be fine. I considered swapping for a rev-up or HR motor, but the cost/benefit did not make sense.

When looking for a new motor make sure to ask if they ran a compression test and the results. If they did not then ask about their warranty and if they would cover labor in the event they sold you a bad engine. I found mine through Nissan Unlimited. They didn't have what I was looking for initially, but called me after a few weeks to say they just bought a car with only 40k miles from an insurance auction after the donor car was totaled for rear-end damage.

Best of luck and happy hunting!
