35th Anniversary vs 07 HR at High Mileage
Hello All!
This is my first post here. Currently own a 2007 A4 6MT that I was selling, but recently changed my mind to keep the car and buy a second car. On the list was the 350z at number 1 followed by the IS300.
In short, I was hoping to make a purchase before summer's end and have a new toy to enjoy. I have a shop with full access where we do our work.
I found a sweet 35th Anniversary in Ultra Yellow with about 131k on it 6MT which I believe I can get for $5500. Now speaking of it, I noticed slight oil leak on driver side valve cover, it will need:
-Rear Diff Bushing
-Clutch/Throw Out Bearing
-New/repainted fender due to a dent (worried about matching ultra yellow)
-Trunk Shocks
-Brakes all around, but not 100% needed immediately
-ABS Code for Battery Voltage Abnormal, no CEL.
-Door only opens with inside handle
-2 master keys, but no key fob
Now my worry with the 05 is the oil consumption. The exhaust tips did not seem sooty. Started in cold let it idle no signs of smoke or anything from the tips. Oil on dipstick seemed ok. Now because the clutch is slipping, could not really test the 2nd-3rd gear shift at high rpm. I have the full car fax, which is a clean 2 owner title but no mention of anything oil consumption related. This is my biggest concern.
Another car I'm looking at is a 1 owner san marino blue 07 enthusiast HR 6MT, but it has 140k. It seems clean, but i have yet to drive it the owner seems older. I'm hoping to see it this weekend. This car is asking 6k OBO.
Now stuck between these two, I'm trying to budget around 6k, 7 at most for a 350z as a second car. Labor costs are no issue, just parts.
Any opinions on risks with the oil consumption or does the HR seem the better fit or even a pass on both?
If this needs to be moved to the buying section please let me know, however it is quite inactive from what I see.
Thanks!

Do you plan on boosting? That is the big question.
If you plan on staying N/A, HR all day long. Just a better motor, updated exterior and interior.
If you are planning on boosting, the DE and Rev-Up have a much larger aftermarket platform.
With all that being said, I love my 08 SMB. Had it since 09 and it still puts a smile on my face.

Car will be staying NA. Suspension, wheels, stickyicky tires, etc. Spirited driving/cruising and the occasional AutoX/Road Race sessions.
I know the reliability on Zs is not an issue. As long as they have been maintained the VQ35 can be near bullet-proof stock. I wish I had a larger budget, but I'm not sure if I want to spend near 10k on a second car essentially. I'm looking to spend the 6-7k and additional on mods here and there.

I think that is a tough price for a HR.
140k miles isn't bad. They are very reliable cars. Few minor issues such as the radio eventually dying and window motors going bad, but mechanically they are sound.
You will learn that modding these cars are expensive, that is of course if you don't cheap out and get Chinese parts. The average exhaust is around 1k, intakes around 500-700 bucks, suspension easily 1-1.5k, etc. But as they always say, gotta pay to play.
Good luck!

Coming from the Audi its all pay to play. That's all fine and with the dual intakes on the HR that price is fair. Prices are exactly as expected.

If you wanted to spend a little more, I'm selling a pretty clean 07 Z with 120k on it, mechanically sound. Only reason I was asking a little more is because it has quality parts on it and was well taken care of (with all service records in hand).
On a side note, I also have an Audi that I'm debating on selling. B6 A4 6MT with 98k.

I have a B7 A4 6MT S Line Titanium in Ibis White. That thing took a lot of hunting to find lol.

Not to be critical, but are you dead sure it is a 35th? Seems like every yellow Z out there gets branded a 35th. Does it have the 7k redline and the brembo brakes?

I can imagine. Good thing those Ti packages hold their value. Gorgeous color combo.

I have an 04 350
and I have 02 Is300
For driving the car daily, relaxing, just cruising. The Is300 ***** all over the the 350z.... and it has a 2jz
The is300 is an all around better car EXCEPT for when you hit a turn.

Now by tough, do you mean tough to beat lol? 6k OBO seemed great and most others said to shoot for the higher mileage HR over the 35th in Ultra Yellow despite the color/brembos. I don't care for the leather thats for sure and prefer the look of the black housing facelift headlights depo makes, but I'm sure the projector quality is subpar to OEM.

HR is night and day difference from a DE. Plus they don't have any oil consumption/burning problems, you have no idea how many friends I can count who have to put a quart of oil every week. Test drive both and I guarantee you will choose HR.

With that being said, the IS300 is no way a better car than a 350Z in terms of performance. And it's the 2jz-ge, not the beloved 2jz-gte unless you did a swap.
I seriously would laugh in somebody's face if they said their IS300 ***** on my car. But then again I have an HR, night and day between the DE and HR.

Yes I have bolt ons and tuned but I still took an IS350 like if he was recording my flybys, multiple rolls from 25 and 45.

Thanks for the tips! Since I'm keeping the Audi, I debated against the IS300 and it is just impossible to find clean or reasonably priced manuals.
The 350Z does have brembos for the Ultra Yellow one and is indeed an anniversary edition, however it did need a fender and clutch and the seller was so so.
The HR however, had a great owner. I feel you interview the seller when you go see a car. He was in his mid 60s and original owner. Currently lives down the shore in a nice area with his wife in NJ. After having his 300ZX TT before, he bought this new and drove it to work which was a 100 mile commute. He recently bought an automatic 335i which he is so so about, but his wife made him sell one and thats where we are. Car has a new exedy pro kit clutch and LW FW. The throwout bearing is noisy however, but trans shifts great AND the clutch pressure is solid. Motor is quiet, no codes I scanned and body was well kept! He put on cross drilled/slotted rotors and EBC reds. I'm gonna swap the brakes out and the bridgestone polepositions on the car are a bit cupped so those will probably stay on for the winter when i need to move the car around (2 car driveway).
Hope to get the feel for her and get some autocross and road race sessions in!
Even at 144k miles, it drove amazing and it showed. We agreed at $5500 for the car. KBB puts mileage/year/trim at about $6500. Hoping to make the trip down south Saturday to get her.
