Default Engine Oil

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to check to see what brand engine oil you all use. The previous owner of the Z I purchased used Royal Purple and from what I read, it seems to be a pretty good brand.

Thanks,

Kal

I've only had my Z33 for one oil change, but I am running Mobil 1.
I have run Mobil 1 for a long time in many other vehicles & not had any problems.

I have used Royal Purple gear lubes several times as well & had good luck.

My biggest advice not to use is Castrol. My dad ran that from new in a car one time & it GUMMED up, in 75k miles. Granted that was 20 yrs ago.

Happy Holidays! Make sure to check out the 540Ratblog at least quarterly. The author has made a few updates. In a nutshell, a new formula Mobil1 0W-40 is back up to #3 on his ranking list. It's currently the best oil tested straight out of the bottle unaltered. The new formula says "European Car Formula" on the bottle.

Also there's a new crop of oils made for both diesel and gasoline engines. Most of them have high rankings. Note: Rotella T6 is not one of them lol. So for those inclined to run a diesel oil on their high revving gasoline engine look up tech article 30 for the best ranked. I'll probably keep my lineup of Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W-30 and Pennzoil High Mileage 5W-30 for value for my aging vehicles. Cheers.

I am using Pennzoil conventional(dino) oil 5w-30. Conventional oil is what the service manual says. Any conventional(not synthetic) oil will do. Any brand with certification from API-ML etc..

I've been using Mobil 1 0W-40 for the last couple of oil changes. Seems to be working fine. I'm going to do a UOA after this interval.

I'm currently running Royal Purple 5w-30 just to try it out. I have used Mobil One full synthetic, Valvoline, Castrol High Mileage & conventional.

Mobil One is the worst oil for me, it seemed to burn quicker & I had to add alot to keep it full. I think Castrol High Mileage is my favorite so far. If all else fails stay conventional dude.

Hi Albaugh81,

Please let me know what you think of the Royal Purple. It seems some people love it and others really hate it.

Thanks!

There isn't any way to tell anything about an engine oil without doing an oil analysis after it's been run in the engine for several thousand miles. Results of those tests have specifically and repeatedly shown the M1 0W-40 to be among the best, with the RP usually quite low in engine protection, compared to other synth oils. Will there be an actual difference in engine life? Who knows?

As someone who has used it since high school, I read and seen tests on the stuff since then and it's rated the lowest not in quality but due to its price. Because testing shows it literally does nothing extra and is just a gimmick to cash on people thinking it's better or race formulated more than others.

Basically just stay away from Penzoil yellow. That said I'm usually using mobile 1 synthetic.

Don't worry everyone, I don't have any Royal Purple in my Z. : ) That was 10 yrs ago when I was using it.

What problems are you guys having with it? When I was using it, I was using it in my Jeeps. I'd go through water & have to change the fluids so often I never went through a whole regular use.

i think it burns off faster and for the price doesn't offer any advantages. It's just basic oil over priced to bank on people thinking it gains horse power and performance.

and I think engine protection values is mid range or lowest.. again for 2x the price. It's just a gimmic.

Hmmm... Only Castrol GTX and Fram... yes, FRAM oil filters on my '87 Hardbody since new. 465,000 miles on it. All of this arguing over oil and filter brands is nuts. If you change 'em every 3000 miles, doesn't really matter what you run.

I've heard of mobile 1 being too thin and being prone to getting burned. Since our engines tend to burn oil. So I use the synthetic blend to keep the oil a little thicker. I usually get the Castrol gtx or pennzoil. Whatever stuff they have on sale at pepboys... with theach filter it's like 30 dollars. Not bad for synthetic blend.

Pennzoil yellow is just fine it one of the better conventional oils now. Don't let old impressions, good or bad, color your judgment. Oils change formulation every few years anyways. In Fact the 0W-40 M1 that we all like changed 3-6 months ago and lost its BMW LL certification.

Where did you read or hear that?

That's the first Ive heard of that. I know over the years some formulas have varied with technology. But the first I've heard of them changing on a regula basis.

Maybe it only been recently but the change to the new DexOS standard and the gas to liquid conversion happening recently has changed a lot of the synthetic oils. It can be seen on the 540 RAT oil testing blog. His testing is useless as we have no idea what he is actual testing but it shows you that oils have changed their additive packages. One recent one is Pennzoil platinum was introduced in 2014? and change to natural gas in 15 or 16?
