Back pressure isn't needed but scavenging is. Scavenging decreases as exhaust diameter increases.
Exhaust velocity being optimal at desired RPM for power, but I would run open headers over stock exhaust any day(I mean not the whole sound thing, because my electric cut-out off my turbo sounds like azz)
4-Stroke Engines do not need back pressure. Back pressure reduces power
2-Stroke engines need back pressure for efficiency.
A 4 stroke doesn't need it as much as a 2 stroke does. I will agree with that. But your claim is that a 4 stroke doesn't need it at all... It is ideal to move exhaust gases out as quick as possible. They move out quicker once you have smaller diameter primaries and a properly sized exhaust pipe. But hey, if you want to build a 6" exhaust with 3" primaries on your headers, be my guest.
