Anyone who can afford $400-$600/mo payments at 18-21 either have one of these situations.
1) A trust fund, other inheritance, or made tons of cash as a teen star or something.
2) Work for their parents company or parents friend's company at way above normal wages.
3) Live at home (or with a bunch of friends sharing rent) and work full time for a company the parents don't run. All cash besides maybe about $50 a pay goes to payments, insurance , and maintenance. I wish I could live at home. I'd have a Elise, Z06, or even a Ferrari!
4) Parents pay for it. At mininum, pay for car payments and/or insurance. (The "parent helps" pay plan.).
5) They are Doogie Houser, and have a Doctorate at 16, therefore can afford the payments. Even Doogie lived at home the first few years. lol
6) Are 2, 3 or 4 but had a car with a huge trade-in value they didn't buy themselves, or had lots of help financing it. Therefore, payments are super low. I also put "parents finance" in this category.
I almost want to start a poll!

At 15 I was doing contract work for a game company for 500 a month, then 18 moved half a country away to start with them at 10 an hour with a foot in the door. Now i'm doing game development and every day I wake up I thank life that things have gone so well so far, as I know it's an exception to the rule and not the usual circumstances that one would expect at 23 without a college degree.
Granted - I am only now getting a Z, I can see how maybe if I saved every penny from 15 onto 20 or so, I could have saved enough for a down payment if I was 19 or 20 but I'd never want the burden of high payments. You bring up a good question though - wondering what payments are like for those that are young. But that's another topic...

Same with me. Would never be able to afford a Z if the 'rents didn't pay for my higher education - for that I will be eternally grateful. Graduated college at 21, got Z by 22, now 23.
But on the brighter side, I'm a junior financial analyst and completely reallocated my parents' retirement portfolio and am actively managing it for them (well active rebalancing).

I'm 31 years old. I picked up the z because I always wanted a sports car. I just bought a condo and my Avalanche was costing me a lot. I sold the truck and got the Z Touring. Its actually cheaper per month than the Avalanche and chicks like it a lot better. LOL Where has this car been all my life. LOL
