Default clunk in back end?

Hey guys and gals,

I just bought my 2007 350z here in Florida down here working and driving it home to Lake Wylie, SC in a few days.
I THINK it is a touring edition? leather, 6sp manual, heated seats, no nav.

Anyhow, i was riding in it with my co-worker driving and 2 times during the ride the back end went CLUNK when he was shifting and put it into another gear. We were not getting on it, just driving in light to light traffic.

U joint issue or? I was like WTF

the dealer was a used lot and bought as IS. so this one will be on me to get fixed when i get home.

Any thoughts and help would be much appreciated!

DJ

DJ- welcome to the board. Have you jacked up your Z and put it on jack stands? That way you can inspect the rear suspension and drivetrain. If you leave it in gear, you can move the rear wheels by hand and see if there's excessive play from the diff itself. From your description, you likely have the VLSD and there shouldn't be a tremendous amount of play in it. But if it moves a lot, you might as well drain the diff and see how the diff lubricant looks. If there's a lot of metal floating on the surface, you may need to rebuild or replace it.
