I am about to change all fluids in my car and am considering either going with Royal purple 5w30 oil and Royal purple Max ATF

or

Mobil 1 5w30 oil and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF

Which do you guys like better?

My friend used to use Royal purple on his 05 350z but he told me the way he drives the oil just burns too quickly soo he switch to Mobil 1 he told me it last longer...hope this helps

Be careful when considering changing out the AT fluid. Nissan has some pretty specific warnings about the use of their own ATF:


Use only Genuine Nissan Matic J ATF.
Do not mix with other fluids.

Using automatic transmission fluid
other than Genuine Nissan Matic J
ATF will cause deterioration in driveability
and automatic transmission
durability, and may damage the automatic
transmission, which is not covered
by the NISSAN new vehicle limited
warranty.

They've gone as far a sealing the transmission so you can't casually add fluid to it.

Yeah, you cant use anything other than J-matic and nobody makes an aftermarket alternative!!!!!!!
As far as the oil goes, forget both and get yourself a true synthetic like Amsoil or Motul!

I like Mobile 1 and Royal Purple, use to run them both until I really started to do some research. Nothing wrong with either really just dont push the mileage on either as they are a group III/IV oil.
As far as the Castrol goes the only kind worth getting is the German made 0W40 availble at Autozone, it says made in Germany right on the back! Otherwise stay away from Castrol.
And make sure you get a quality filter, Mobil 1 extended milage filters are great and reasonably priced.

+1 Mobile one has similar characteristics, but its just not as bad. RP is just really thin. I use Mobile One now but I change my oil every 2k miles b/c I run nitrous. So I really don't see any oil burning which short oil-changing intervals like that.

Mobil 1 or Royal Purple? 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. No difference. No body knows what these oils contain anyway. Recipes are trade secrets. Mobil 1 won't tell you a thing about what they put in their oil. I would assume that M1 is a type III and that Royal purple a guessed to be a type IV. No one really knows. Castrol European blend 0W40 is definetly a type IV synthetic.

I had one of my Nissans spit out a ton of lead when i used redline oil. Switched back to Mobil 1 and it was much better. Don't know why it did it but I never used Redline again. I used Blackstone labs at the time as it was a DD and a HPDE car.

Always use Mobil 1 on my cars, and never had any problems, and Motul on my Suzuki 1k and Busa 13. [U]Always synthetic[/U].

The 5AT uses a special 2 section lockup clutch to increase cruise mpg that needs the special J stick slip characteristics unlike the older 4AT [single lockup clutch] which was designed for Dexron 11e-g.

The J has quality similar to Syn ATF however the friction coefficient must be addressed. Otherwise you will burn the clutches faster and have funky lockup and noise..................why they require the as designed ATF.

BTW, unless people have actually tested the oil after a period of time thru a lab it's really hard to recommend for or against a product. Other then they bought into the adertising the manufacture publishs. I have never seen anyone using Mobil 1 have a bad test result thru Blackstone Labs. The thing to do is test your standard oil, the retest after using whatever you switched to.

I vote for Nissan ATF fluid (although it may still be worth it to do the flush)

Mobil oils are highly marketed to the point that they're mostly hype IMO. I just don't see much value for the money. You might want to check on bobistheoilguy forums for more info.

I've always used Mobil until my last oil change and tried RP. Now into 600 miles on RP and I don't like. Will be using Motul next and forever. But I still like Mobil though.

All that Matic J is is synthetic blend. As long as you use synthetic, you will be fine, ATF that is.

Good, why would you feel a difference? You won't on these oils unless you buy some super thin oil meant for Showroom Stock racing to give you that last tiny edge. Street cars don't use that type of oil. Anyone who says they do feel a difference has talked themselves into feeling it.
