Top needs replacing.
Took a look at my top two days ago, and it is pulling back where the top panel meets the back on the passenger side at the seam. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a common issue, and it would be replaced under warranty, with the improved design top. Anyone know what the improved top is? I looked at the new ones in the lot, but could not see the difference.

Lots of info if you search. A bunch of us had our tops replaced. Be sure when they outsource this job they pick a reputable shop. Call them see if this is what they specialize in.

Not much information on the new style top going bad. I have an 05 with the double stitched top, but that isn't a factor in where it is coming apart. The main thread where they are going on about replacing the top is from the early models with the single stitch along the sides. I have the twin stitching, and the service guy was telling me that there was an improved design top, which is what I am trying to find out what exactly that is.

I can't post a picture, but the hole is really small, maybe a 1/4" long and 1/16" wide. It is at the end of the long seam that runs down the passenger side of the roof, right where it meets up with the back panel. There is where three different panels come together. Maybe this pic will help.
It is at the bottom part of the seam where the long seam going fore and aft ends.

Well, I'm curious to see as to how the new top differs from the old one. This is my third vert, and I have yet to see a top go bad like this, but then again, this is the thinest top I have ever had. When this replacement top wears, I'll be looking for a Haartz cloth top, 31 ounce or better. That would make highway driving with the top up (on rainy days of course) much more quiet.

I had the same problem and the dealer replaced the top. However, now I have a totally different problem.
I hit the window up button, and the window rolls all the way up, and then about 1/4 the way down. I hit the window up button again, and the window rolls all the way up again, and then about 1/4 the way down again.
Eventually, the window will stay up. Sometimes I dont have this problem, and then other times I go through this charade 6-7 times before the window stays up.
Anyone have similar problem or idea for solution? I am sure it has something to do with this new top.

charlie, you might want to look into it. the hole in my top is no more than 1/4" at the longest, and the dealer agreed to have it replaced, no questions asked. My hole was where the top overlaps the rear panel, and it seems it simply is being pulled forward, causing the seam to fail, thus the replacement. It doesn't hurt to ask though, the worst they can say is no.

Alright, I just got the car back from the dealer, and the new top is on. It is no different from the original one. So much for the "improved version". The company they had do it did a really good job though, tight as a drum, and the windows and all open and close normally. I didn't get the name of the company they outsourced to.
