Default TOP problem

I don't drive my Z every day but maybe every 3 - 4 days. I've had no problems out of it. I leave it parked in my garage with the windows down but the top up.

Today i tried to lower the top and nothing happened. I tried everything. I can hear a "clicking" sound in the door pannels around where the window switches are. My window work perfectly.

The car is out of warrenty and i'm not sure what to do or even where to take the car. I tried to get a Haynes manual to see if i could fix the problem but there isn't a manual available. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know if this is the same case, but a few weeks ago my top would not open. I finally found out that the brake light switch (right above the brake pedal) wasn't functioning. Since you have to have the brake depressed for the top to go down, it wouldn't work. After some WD-40 and messing with it for awhile it worked again and I haven't had any problems with it since. There are two switches on the brake pedal, I believe it was the lower of the two.

JM1521, thanks for the advice. i just checked my brake wires & etc. and they seem good. i think the problem is in the door pannel. When i hit the button for the top to go down my windows go down automatically and thats it. I'll hit the button again after my windows are down and i can hear a "click" coming from the same place the window switches are. I'm wondering if this problem happened because i leave my windows down for days at a time in my garage. Reguardless the problem, i'd like to figure it out and get it fixed.

If anyone else thinks they can help me out or point me in the right direction i'd greatly appreciate it!

First off i really do not know what it could be. With that said if it was my car and I was certain it had something to do with the door i would take off the door panel and see if I could find the clicking sound. i would look for some type of limit switch of something that has to make contact with something in the door before it allows the top to go down. It sounds like what ever insures the windows are down before the top is allowed to go down is not working properly. I hope this helps somewhat.

I hate things like these where the dealership seems to be the only answer.

Let us know the outcome!

My ZR just started having this exact same problem today. Has anyone been able to figure out what it is? If I can't figure it out, I have an appointment at the dealership tomorrow morning to get it fixed.

When you take it to the dealer will you ask what was wrong & how much the fix is. i can't seem to find time to mess with mine. I hate it cause my car only has 17k miles but since its an 04 its out of warrenty.

I took it to the dealer today, they couldn't figure it out by looking at it/research so they took it to the upholstery shop where I had the new top put on (about a month ago) and they couldn't figure it out either. I have to take it in again on Monday for them to start tearing it apart, they said it will take a couple of days to fix. They say that they have never heard of this problem before. I'll update next week.

are you having the same "clicking" sound come from the door panels? If so, why would they take it to the upholstery shop if its coming from the door panels. Either way, keep us informed. Thanks.

Yeah, I have the same exact symptoms you have from your first post on here (seat moves forward, windows down, clicking noise in door and the click of the lock in the back for the top then nothing.) I just had my top replaced a couple of weeks ago. The dealership apparently took the car to some upholstery shop to get the new one put on... I figure they think that the ppl at the upholstery shop may have done something for this to happen. I'm taking it in again in the morning, I'll let you know as soon as they figure it out.

It's been in the shop going on 4 days now... they still haven't made any progress. This is ridiculous.
