That sucks... Glad nothing bad happenend though. I take it you have no warranty for the car? I hope getting that gear welded on in the different position fixes it. Let us know... hope no one has to deal with this, sounds like not only will it scare the bejesus out of you but its expensive.

About two weeks after getting my roadster, I was cruising down the highway at night. I went to flip on the map light and mistakenly hit the roof release and the roof sprung. Luckily, the latches grabbed and the roof only raised a centimeter or so. I prompty pulled down on the roof (the ledge at the very front) and pulled over onto the shoulder immediately to relatch it. Scared the crap out of me... and I of course felt like a complete idiot. No damage to the roof from it, but I definately know where the map light is now (Didn't realize at the time there's even a little yellow indicator light for morons like me)!
Sorry to hear that you weren't so fortunate.

Still dont have the car back yet, its being fixed but here is a fun fact. The lock/latch mechanism that I need and is almost 1300 at the dealership is $440 on nismoparts.com under their oem parts section. Just as unused, just as new just as original and 800 off the price!!

Never buy parts from a dealership, its a complete rip-off

I know this is an old thread but I'm so glad I found it. I had the exact thing happen to me in my 2004 roadster about 3 weeks ago! I was driving to work cruising along about 70 mph and like you said all of the sudden the top flew up!!! Nearly scared me to death. I still don't know how I managed to grab the roof, hit the turn signal and breaks at the same time. I pulled over onto the shoulder, made my way to the off ramp and onto a parking lot where I struggled and struggled to close it and it wouldn't line up properly. I finally gave up trying to latch it and put the top all the way down and drove on in to work. I know I had it latched and I had been driving it for several days with the top up before this happened. I left it at the dealership this morning and just found out that the latch assembly alone is $1289. They said they have to replace it first before they can tell exactly what else may be wrong.
