Default Advice? Still Looking for my 350z. First Post

Hi there My 350z folks,

Jonathan here in Virginia and I'm now taking my search sort of nationwide. I test drove my first 350z today locally after giving up on this old lady in my hood leading me on who who thinks her 86' 300zx that needs paint and rust repair is worth a fortune!

So on to a more practical plentiful car. Most of the 350's here in are really roached and clapped out. Not many good options locally. Even the low mileage 50k one I saw today seemed like it had a rough or neglected life (interior and paint were scaggy, it drove like a dream but they wanted top dollar and wouldn't negotiate down one bit). I see better options out of state. Goal is under 100k miles and around 14-16k dollars.

So any big things to look out for on these older cars? Engine sounds....soft top issues aside from obvious rips...mostly looking at verts and only at manual cars. I'm very technical with cars and I can do a lot on a car. I work on my Audi S4 and totally restored my 68' Mustang (except for painting). Also does anyone know why in 06' the verts still had the 287 HP motor but the Coupes got 300 HP? I guess I'll worry about upgrades after I get this, but I have another car with much more power But always curious as sometimes you can upgrade a component from the next year model.

For example the 2006 Z seemed kind of "clacky" on startup today. Clutch was a bit sticky at the end of the travel coming up. Maybe those are normal...I've only driven 1 so far so have no comparison.

I'm an engineer not a salesman or skilled negotiator But me thinks....there are are not *tons* of people after manual transmission two seater cars. It looks like many don't sell easily. But when the dealers get them, they really thing it's a hot ticket and they can go well over NADA and KBB values due to the overall auto shortages. Sales guy even told me today that KBB is 'old hat stuff cooked up by a bunch of "good ole boys". LOL I may be in my 40's but I don't think these things or I am that outdated.

06 Touring Verts w/Silver or Lagos Fire. These are the trims I've been looking for and looking at.

Welcome and my advice is to keep looking. Z33s have not been produced for over 12 years and are in short supply. The '06 ZR you're looking at was produced in a crossover year when the mid-model upgrades were being introduced. The ZRs got the VQ35DE with 287 HP and the coupes went to the rev-up version with a bit more HP. But if you're looking at verts, you should be aware they utilize a complex electrical/mechanical mechanism that only an engineer can appreciate. Good luck on your search.
