You can open the top to a position where all of the tension is off the bow.
The first time I did the fix it was not tight enough. The double sided tape will still hold if you pull the elastic off and tighten it until it works properly.

What if instead of using tape you could try those sticky velcro strips cut them down to size and stick or sew one side to the elastic strap and stick the other side where it needs to go should be stronger than the masking tape.

sort of like this but there's others

I wouldn't suggest using masking tape. I used 3M double sided tape. It is the same tape used when replacing the rag top. It will last longer than the elastic bands. The 3M version is also easy to remove and has enough adhesion to make adjustments when applied properly. I'm sure the velcro would work but isn't it tape?

Sorry I missed the 3m tape part but they are backed with 3M tape so they're pretty strong. I was thinking that the Velcro fasteners would be a way to make a tighter connection, I've read a couple threads were people replaced them but they say they are not tight enough.
Here's another example,

The fisrt time I did the repair I purchased the replacement bands and they only lasted about 3 months. This fix allows you to re-tighten the elastic if it starts to get too loose. You will also have enough elastic to replace the bands several times.

Its a good method I maybe getting a ZR today if my wife doesn't complain to much she doesn't like riding in the zx to much when I take it out and your information on the elastic bands was very helpful.

Next add tape to the 3rd bow and wrap the elastic band around it. Make sure it is tight enough to pull the 2nd bow into position when top folds
No one has mentioned length needed to complete this? is this different for everyone that has tried this? I am going to give this a shot this weekend . thanks the info!!

Just did this fix today on my 350z. I bought the following part from amazon since my local shop didn't have it:

Qty 1
Cotowin 3-Inch Wide Black Knit Heavy Stretch Elastic 3 Yards
Amazon.com: Cotowin 3-Inch Wide Black Knit Heavy Stretch Elastic 3 Yards Amazon.com: Cotowin 3-Inch Wide Black Knit Heavy Stretch Elastic 3 Yards

Qty 1 roll
3M Scotch Heavy Duty Mounting Tape, 1-Inch by 125-Inch (314) holds up to 5 lbs.
Amazon.com: 3M Scotch Heavy Duty Mounting Tape, 1-Inch by 125-Inch (314) holds up to 5 lbs.: Home Improvement Amazon.com: 3M Scotch Heavy Duty Mounting Tape, 1-Inch by 125-Inch (314) holds up to 5 lbs.: Home Improvement

As for the length. I matched the fabric to the length of the space between the two bars. I taped one end securely and then pulled a elastic so that it was was tight, but not too tight. Did the same to the other side. First shot it worked .

Thanks again for this tutorial your saved me a possible $400 of parts and labor.

I was looking at mine this week after I forgot to push and it got stuck. I wonder if you could pull some slack out by doubling a section of the strap and sew it to itself to shorten the length....think I'm going to try it

would it not be better to use a heavier elastic ans sew the ends? I found this on Amazon. I'm going to just replace the old ones and rivit it in.
