Problem with top completely opening.. not 5th Bow or Elastic I don't think
Hey guys, I've been searching this forum and the maintenance and repair forum for anyone who has a similar problem to mine, but I've only found 5th bow or elastic straps problems, and they both appear to fail earlier than mine does...
I just had a detailer come over and do my car because I got a good deal on Groupon from it... anyway, he left it looking pretty good, but I think he somehow caused this problem I'm having with the top, because it was working fine last night and wasn't immediately after he was finished detailing it.
The motor is clearly working fine, as it opens quickly and smoothly. Everything else mechanical also seems to be okay, and I'm thinking that he just maybe messed something up so that it's getting stuck on something as it tries to finish the "open" procedure. However, I don't see anything obvious and I don't really know what it looked like back there before the problem started... I've taken as many pictures as I can, in the hopes that someone who knows how it works better might be able to tell me if there is something stuck that is preventing it..
When I try to press "open" from here, I can hear the motor still working, but I hear a noise like pressure on plastic or rubber, and whatever it is prevents it from completing the process. It's a 2008 Roadster Touring.. not sure if there's anything I'm forgetting that might help anyone in assisting me, but I'll be glad to offer any more details needed. I can also get a video of it if that would be more helpful, but will have to recruit a friend to do it.
*as far as it will go

I wasn't sure how many images were allowed per post, so I made a new thread here, hopefully some of these would be helpful.... any suggestions on what I might try to fix this would be great.. I'm a student and don't have gobs of money to go to the dealership for help on it, if I can avoid it at all.

So im not alone then!
Im currently having a problem where mine wont close the last half inch or so and lock into place when down. So far i replaced the straps and put new brushes in the 5th bow motor with no luck. I think like once or twice it closed all the way.
From the picture you posted it looks like its like 4 or 5 inches short. Ill post a pic of mine when I get home. Could it be that he bent the bow somehow or messed up the elastic strap that pulls the one bar back??

I'm not really sure, to be honest... nothing is obviously bent out of shape or warped to me, but I didn't ever look at what everything looked like before the problem occurred. I'm taking it to a convertible top specialist tomorrow to have him take a look at it and see if he can figure out what's going on with it. Needless to say, I'd imagine I'll be seeing this crap detail shop in small claims court. They didn't return my call yesterday and haven't called back today after I left messages on both the detailer's cell phone and the office's phone explaining that they had damaged my top.

So I took it to the convertible specialists today, and the first employee I talked to also thought it wouldn't be the elastic bands problem because it usually gets stuck further up... apparently it is the elastic bands though, according to the boss, and they were able to do something manually to make it go all the way down once... so anyway, I'm getting the bands replaced for $35 from a Nissan dealership, and then taking it back to this place to have them actually replaced for $120 labor.

I just had a new top put on 3 weeks ago. The upholster told me too wait that long for it too stretch so I did. Now I'm having this same problem you have described. Please tell what the final outcome was. This is the only thread that describes my exact problem.

New top same isssue no issues at all with old top
I just installed a new twill top on my 2004. I now have the same issue but I know I installed correctly also lubed up all while top was off. All the straps are okay. With old top it would fly down and up no issues. now it stops 6 inches or so from full open. I can slowly push it down in place and get all to close in the trunk and top is completely down. Going up I have no issues. I did not lube the tracks on the 5th bow not sure if I should afraid it might slip and cause more issues.
I also stuff 1/8 in foam in front header where it locks into windshield hoping to stretch between top. If the sun ever comes out that would help, cold weather here in not helping.
We will see.
