I’ll be able to share my opinion on the Hankook Ventus R-S2 tire a little later this month. This is my first year at autoX. I’ve been to probably 5-6 events total. I’m currently racing in B Stock. I’ve not had any formal driving training or experience. With exception to tires my 2006 350z is completely stock.
I’m currently running (x2) BFG GForce KD 265-40-18 is the rear
And (x2) 255-40-18 Michelin Pilot Sport PS1 in the front
With this setup the car tends to push (under steer) easily. I’ve had no luck with trail braking. The class I run in prohibits any modification outside the factory components for tuning camber. As we all know I don’t have any chance of modifying the front camber without upgrading the factory control arms. On top of the lack of camber adjustment the Michelin Pilot Sports don’t have the lateral grip needed to break while turning. The car needs to be completely slowed down before turning the steering wheel. If I enter a corner too quickly invoking under steer the Michelins quickly over heat. Once the tires are too hot my straight line breaking goes to crap and the lap times drop further.
The BFG GForce tires have been great. They actually work a little better warmed up and are absolutely consistent. I get good forward and lateral grip at all times. When I do break traction from over steer I can easily regain control of the car by easing off the throttle slightly. The BFGs seem less susceptible to over heating. Even after 4 runs without cooling tire grip is strong and consistent.
I just purchased (x2) Hankook Ventus R-S2 265-35-18 tires to replace the Michelins that are currently up front. I should be attending an AutoX event a little later this month. I’ll continue this post with my results/impressions of the tires after the event.
