If they are behind a firewall (Linksys most common) then you will need to configure port forwarding on port 3389 from the router primary IP to the private IP of the computer your connecting to.

then just type mstsc in run and connect to the public IP followed by :3389 (RDP)

You will be prompted to login so ensure you the account you use is an administrative account.
Gotcha I'll give this a try.

I had VNC before and used it but hadn't set it up from different computers that aren't on the same network. Going to try setting up these setting and see if that works.
