I ran into this too.....I had a legit copy of XP that I bought for an old PC that I had since parted out and sh!tcanned. I found out that Microsoft changed their policies and activation processes recently and they won't let you activate a copy of windows that had ever been activated before on another CPU. I just gave up on it finally because there was no way I was going to pay for it again so I just removed windows from VMware and don't miss it at all.
