Default Cracked Z1 Rear Rotor

Hi All,

I had purchased a set of cross drilled, slotted rotors from Z1 motorsports 6 months ago and loved them. The drivers side rear cracked about a week ago so i need another rear. I was wondering if anyone else is having probelms with cracking rotors to see if this was a trend. I drive the car as a street car and aggresively at a local airport I have access to. Here is a link to the product.

Ps: I spoke with Z1 and they offer no warranty or discount on a replacement FYI

go with slotted/blanks. The heating/cooling of the rotors tends to leave small cracks around the holes, and over time you get what you have.

+1 on slotted
This is not the first set of cracked crossdrilled rotors. A set of slotted or blanks are more durable for track usage (guess you really drive the **** outa that car at the airport!)

Who's the manufacturer? Z1 is probably the reseller and warranty items usually fall to the manufacturer to address.

Our rotors use BPI blanks, BPI is a major OEM supplier but they have recently shifted their policy to no longer warranty cross drilled rotors. Which has not been a problem for us in the past as we sell a large number of these rotors (hundreds a year) without issue. In the 2+ years that I have handled purchasing at Z1 we've had a total of 4 350Z rotors come back to us with cracking issues. It is unfortunate in this case, but the manufacturer has made the call not to warranty them any further. Despite the excellent track record we've had with these rotors we are looking at other suppliers who will offer a warranty.

I wouldnt warranty something like that either. From what I've seen it is a common thing with those type of rotors from other manufactures also

If you have only 4 bad rotors, why not back them up with a replacement? Your out of pocket expense will be what? $200? Its a small price to pay to restore customer confidence.

Drilled and/or slotted stock replacemet rotors are for show, they will crack when abused.

I know the drilled ones will, but I haven't seen a slotted one suffer the same fate.

Slippery slope. Nissan wouldn't make a rotor a mm thicker if it didn't have to. Material properties and rotor dimensions are based around a blank.

Nothing wrong, remember brakes suffer a lot of abuse, different pad compounds etc etc. Its not like they can control what happens to them. I would doubt any of the cracked rotors are actually defective.

The function of drilling a rotor is only to promote weight reduction. The holes themselves offer no additional advantage as far as improved cooling. Given the fact that the rotor is so close to the hub, the actual difference in performance due to smaller rotational inertia is most likely non-perceivable. Essentially, don't bother buying drilled rotors because you get no performance benefit and you risk premature failure. As already mentioned, the drilling process weakens the material and causes micro fractures which can eventually lead to major problems.

The only fully safe and way to manufacture a drilled rotor is to actually cast it with holes in it from the start. Porsche does this and this is why they can warranty their product for track purposes. Obviously, this type of casting is much more expensive which is why their price is "slightly" higher

Go with dimpled rather than drilled rotors.

Crossed drilled rotors will crack, just a matter of when.

Hmm...I dont mind the difference of opinion, but calling me a moron is kind of out of line. I'll leave it at that.
