Default Z35 to go back to the Z's roots?

I've been hearing 1 of 2 things for the "Z35" for a couple years now because of the Z34's Sales.

#1. It'll be smaller, true to it's roots.
#2. Hiatus Time.......again

This is just the latest "talks" I've seen.

Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S got you excited? Well, it appears the new Toyobaru twins might be moving the needle at other automakers, too. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the pair may have challenged Nissan to once again reinvestigate its on-again, off-again plans for an affordable, lightweight sports coupe of its own. Nissan's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, says his employer is looking at downsizing its Z sports car, though it isn't clear if that would mean the Japanese automaker would field two separate Z models or just replace the current 370Z with a smaller, less costly model.

"I much prefer smaller sports car," Nakamura tells the Herald. "It is the time to look at that. With 370Z, we still don't know next generation will have a larger or smaller engine."

If Nissan were to reduce the size of the 370's powerplant, it would be the first time that model's displacement has dropped. Since the Z gets its model designation from the size of its engine (3.7 liter V6), Nissan could have a problem marketing a smaller Z called the 300Z, since the last time a new 300Z was sold in the States was way back in 1986.

More likely would be the revival of long-forgotten nameplates like 200SX or 240SX. Either would almost certainly be direct competition for the Subaru and Scion rear-drive coupes.

Nakamura reminded fans that even if the 370Z loses some cubic inches, Nissan will still have the young but already legendary GT-R. When asked if Nissan would be willing to support three sports cars, Nakamura says, "If there is a market, we will do it."

What are your thoughts on a smaller and lighter (and possibly weaker) Z Car? - Double duty as both a Z and S Chassis?

"Smaller"?IMO,this means a possible smaller displacement engine with MORE power.
Basically thats where most manufacturers are going. The size of the Z will not get smaller.
It will get lighter.
Don't put too much credence in this comments from Nissan. When you reread them, they
are very vague..."subject to change".I do see a possibility of a turbo in the neXt platform Z.The system used in the Juke, albeit larger is pretty cool.
I foresee styling in the "new" Z (and many other cars)becoming more crisp...sharp edges.
More of a "stealth" look like the new Lamborghini A.

I do not own a 350Z but I have wanted one for many years, if they were to make the new Z lighter that would be great, smaller, I guess that would be okay but not too much smaller.

Smaller engine with less HP, absolutely not, that would be horrible I would definitely not buy one.

I wouldn't even want to see a Z with a turbocharged 4-cyl even if it had more horsepower 6-cyl or larger for me, I have yet to hear a 4-cyl exhaust note that I liked other than I4 sport bikes.

I'm still waiting for the hybrid Z that some people were claiming was coming a few years ago.

I would rather see a faster, more expensive Z that would compete with the M3 and 5.0 Mustang than a slower, smaller, car. Nissan really needs to bring back the Silvia to compete with the BRZ.

I'd love to see a cheap, light S chassis and see the Z progress to a higher level to compete with M3 and the like.

I'd be fine if they decreased displacement as long as it was TT from the factory, but it would be kinda weird to revert to say 300z after 370z

I'm assuming we all believe that the 370z was a massive misstep and will
cost at least a billion dollars and a decade to fix.

Personally, If the VQ35HR woulda never existed and the "Normal" 370Z had the 350HP out the box that the Nismo 370Z has - That woulda been a proper leap forward.

287hp (pre SAE.....more like 260, 270ish nowadays) to 350hp (post SAE) - then keep in tune with '03 350Z pricing (25K for the base model!!!)

Yeah the 370 woulda sold hotcakes IMO, It's a good car as is but I don't feel 370Z was a huge leap up - more like a refresh and then the Neo Muscle Car Era happened and, Joe Shmoe only cares about looks, sounds and a name.......not performance and handling.

I know for certain that a Nismo 370Z or a 370Z Sport/Touring will be my next car.

Completely aggree , but I would love to see an NA 320Z, with a 3.2HR that's puts out Porsche Cayman power , and of course a lighter chassis like a Cayman S.

The mustang and 3 series are not sports cars, no need to worry about them.

It makes perfect sense to shoot for another market... after all the Z isn't as fast as a Mustang(same price demographic) but is faster than a FT86.

Just doesn't care...

Hopefully they go in the s chassis route and not try to make the Z car fill shoes it can't anymore...

I just hate/don't like how buldgy the GT-R/370Z are...

I would only get the next Z if it can actually beat the Cayman R, somewhat compete with a regular 997 Carrera, and cost less than $50K.

For the flagship Z car I would like to see more power ie Turbo and a price of $45K or more. This would be feasible if Nissan decided to resurrect the 240/200SX at a price point of $26K on up.

+1 what Angelo said in post #12

Agree.

Nissan killed the 300Z and introduced the 200SX. Why? Because the 300Z grew into a fat touring pig. Same eventual fate for the 370Z. You cannot continue to keep adding cubic inches without adding weight. So by-by 370Z hello 270SX.

Actually Nissan refers to the Maxima as its flagship.

True, I should have worded it different. Nissan's Iconic sports car. I still think Nissan should bump up the power and if it is a little more than the equivalent Mustang/Camaro, so be it. It was that way for the 300ZTT back in the 90's. Time will tell...

i hope Nissan doesn't disappoint. they delivered well with the R35 GTR. i'm hoping turbocharging will be standard for the next Z as well as better styling than the Z34.
