OK, dumb question of the day.
I tried dragging the .jpg into the message area but it only shows the link, not the pic. Is that the right way to do this? Do I need to get the image hosted on a pic server somewhere?

Yes you need to host the image at a site like imageshack or photobucket

you had the [img] tags around a url to the whole page and not the image. I took the liberty of fixing it (hope you don't mind ). You can right click on the image and click on properties. Copy the image location and then use the [img] tags around the address of the image location.
