Cheap but good dash cam project?

Cheap but good dash cam project?
Hey everybody,
Thinking about adding a dash cam...
I saw on autoblog.com that Garmin has some new HD dash cam coming out for about $219, and saw in the comments that good dash cams can be had for much less. So...
Anyone have any suggestions on how to accomplish this?, where does it mount, and in my case...I don't have a double din stereo with a screen, so I'm wondering what people are using for playback?
In my ideal James Bond machonagination I'd like to add a rear facing recorder too...is there a cheap way to have that too?
I'll bug everyone about rocket launchers later.

219 sounds about right anything less u will not be getting hd quality. I believe I paid like 350 for my Sony finevu but it included GPS black box, power kit , polarizing lens, and it was the best hd quality I seen on the net
Also has ability to record while parked as it detects motion and has shock sensor

Wow the Sony sounds nice...I've never really looked into this much before, I'll research that to learn.
For the people that go non-HD...any thoughts on the best functional unit that does ok? I'm not looking to archive drives..just want to have a record of idiot drivers should anything happen as I've had some boneheads cause a close call.
Ideally...sure...HD would be great and fun to make traveling videos as well for memories, but I really just want some dash camage in case of crash damage or insurance scammage

For those who already have dash cams, can you post pictures of your set up and maybe a sample video from the dash cam (preferably during night time)?
I've been thinking about a dash cam for quite a while but never really pulled the trigger as I didn't feel it was a necessity. It'd definitely be nice to have, though.
Here are some review sites that I thought were helpful:

yes, $219 is not cheap for a dash camera, mostly dash cameras are installed on the windshields, for playback, many dash cameras with LCD displays for live review and mounting adjustment, for those without LCD display, you might need to get an external display if this feature supported.
Have a look at http://www.szswill.com/car-camera.html to see the most common dash cameras available on the markets.

I work For an EVS company (Emergency Vehicle Services) and I build police cars with HD cameras all day long I can Get an HD back up system but screen is in the rear view mirror for about 75.00 bucks my cost.
Pretty decent set up used in just about every cop car built. Has an input for the rear cam and also has an input for a second channel which is switched to on the touch screen mirror. I think the screen is about 2.5 or 3''. Lmk if your interested in more info.
