Default Dashcam?

So I'm curious what you guys use? I mainly want this for if I were to get in an accident. I had a close call the other day where an elderly lady ran a light at 40-50 mph and almost hit my front end.

Any suggestions would be great.

I would move this from one car to another, I want it to power on and off when the car is turned on/off. Also good video quality.

I recently started a thread asking the same question:

I bought a gopro2 few weeks back for $50 bux and currently using it as dash cam, I mounted on my windsheild. There are a few down side to it:
1) it doesn't haves the looping feature like the 3
2) manually turn on/off
3) night visibility is so so.

I've been looking at another alternative for my dash cam use but the gopro will do now.

Here's a previous thread on this, although I'm not sure how much it will help:

Hmmm some good information but not a definitive answer. Seems like it's still kind of new technology. I've seen a lot of the Russian accidents and they have good quality and sound. Those damn russians!!

It's only new tech in the US. That's why all the tech blogs made a big deal about garmin's "exciting new dash cam product". This is old news in other countries and the tech is very well developed overseas already. It's kinda like how when cellphones first came out the US was wayyy behind the rest of the world for many many years (prior to smartphones).

Checkout the links 350 posted in his other thread. There's some super helpful reviews/comparisons of some of the top cams.

just came back from overseas and was impressed with dashcams
built into rear view mirrors, some front /rear

checking ebay I see some have monitors also in the mirrors,
and are very reasonably priced

Wow I'm impressed as most of those suggested ones. Seems like they are much cheaper then I thought. I think the go pro is mainly for when you want to record something not really continuous.

Seems like were always behind the curve but that's not surprising lol.

If you've got an android phone, you might want to consider Dailyroads Voyager.

If your phone is NFC compatible, you can stick a NFC tag on your mount to launch Dailyroads whenever you slide it in the mount.

Using GoPros or smartphones to use as a dash cam may work but you'll be losing a lot of neat features that actual dash cams come with. There's some links I posted in the thread I linked above that you guys might want to check out.

What brand and model is this? Looks very crisp and good quality.

The go pro seems nice I can get one at best buy for a decent price and use my credit card. what is the name of the app to turn the unit off and on?

Also is there a way for it to power on and off automatically when the ignition of the car is off/on.
