Default Free Air Sub

Question?

Has anyone mounted a Free Air Subwoofer such as a Kicker 40CWS104 10" in the stock Bose location? If so, what would be a good amp to use?

I am looking to improve the bass in my car but not to window shaking volumes. Any help would be great!

You can do it but it wont be that wonderful. The best option if you want to keep it in the stock location would be to remove the blose sub and build (or have one built) a small sealed box that will slide into the cubby.

If you're determined to go with Kicker I would get the 2 ohm model such as this one

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2064CWD...02.html?tp=111

And then this would be a great amp to power it.

https://www.woofersetc.com/p-12418-s...amplifier.aspx

It has a small footprint so it wont take up a lot of room in the glove box. I love me some Sundown. They are the only amps I will run.

I'm just about do this very type of install in my Z this weekend. However without going custom its going to be hard to get a 10" firing thru the stock opening. Thus I'm putting an 8" in. I found a prefab box that will fit, (ironically its for a 10").

I've been running a sealed 8" in small custom box in the hatch for over a year and it sounds great. Granted its not going to impress people at some car show but its perfect for decent sound in the Z's small interior. I had a 12" sub before in a downfiring SRQ glove box but all that did was rattle like crazy.

I've got a Kicker IX 500.4 amp UNDER the passenger side storage unit, no problems with heat on these new small digital amps. And 250 watts for a small setup is plenty.

I'm running this http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Boss-P100F-10-1200-Watt-Car-Shallow-Slim-Subwoofer-Power-Sub-Woofer-Audio-/231280525633?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d964c141
I forget the box size that I made (maybe .5cu) but it was pretty small. Enough bass to make the sound much better, never enough for it to be too much

DO NOT DO FREE AIR!!!

I went through this a few months ago and there is such an easy solution! Take the bracket out that the B(l)ose sub is mounted in and put a kicker Loaded Enclosure inside (like this one: http://www.kicker.com/40TCWRT102) firing up. It will sound so much better than any free air sub.

I did not use the loaded box just because at the time I did not know that it would fit, never even considered it. i have a Kicker CompRT 10" attached to a KX400.1 amp and it will shake my rear view mirror. Here's the thread to my whole build: https://my350z.com/forum/audio-build...-complete.html

I have 2 10"s in the hatch and I can see my windshield/hood/side mirrors/sun visors, steering wheel and hatch flexing.

Yay!

Nice looking setup RobinHood5. I like the 2 speaker grill look. I am actually thinking about trying an Infinity BassLink 10" powered sub. Looks like it will fit and I wouldn't need another amp to run the sub.

Thanks to everyone for you comments. They really helped.

RobinHood5 - what about rattles? In my experience firing a sub up (or down) in the stock location (aka glove box woofer) just caused all the metal and plastic back there to squeak and rattle like crazy. However your two speaker grills acting as "vents" might be the key here. My solution to this problem is a prefab box but with one 8" firing thru the stock opening.

I'm really surprised that someone (like Wicked CAS) hasn't made a version of the popular glove box but for two front firing 8"s. Maybe people don't realize how good 8"s can sound and immediately jump to trying to fit 10"s or 12"s.

Dont go with the basslink, you will not be happy with the sound output. The 350z has so much road noise that even with my bigger system you probably get 30% of the bass while driving compared to when your not. You also will pay nearly the same amount for it.

I only just now started having a rattle for the first time (after 6 months) and it was the wood box (not carpeted) physically rattling against the metal. I put carpet below it and its no problem now.

It should also be noted that most subwoofers that are listed as "free air" are not any different than normal subs. The Kicker CompRT is listed that it can be used for free air applications but I guarantee it would sound terrible. Only self sealed subs are truly free air subs and their generally very bulky and expensive, I don't even know anyone that sells them anymore.

92K1500 - OMG those are massive 8"s however given the huge surrounds what is the effective piston area? Maybe 6" ? However I guess its made up for with an insane xmax but its going to take some serious power I bet.

I've always been a fan of multiple smaller drivers vs one large speaker. Two 8"s > one 10" for sure!

Why not go with 2 10s under the arc in the rear hatch? Just out of curiosity

I don't have a hatch or that is what I would do. Having a roadster really limits what I can do for speaker setups.

They are rated at 300RMS each but I'm going to throw about 1kw to the pair. Jacob said they should take it easy.

SD-2 8 :

The SD-2 8" is a very unique driver in our line. It is our first under-hung design; which means the coil is actually shorter than the top plate and remains completely immersed in the magnetic field without varation over most of it's stroke. For the more technical reader you may notice the top plate does not appear to be tall enough to be classified as under-hung. The fact is our deep custom tooled frame, originally developed for the SA-8 v.2, allowed us to tuck most of the top plate up insde the frame to achieve a total top plate thickness of one full inch without adding additional depth to the driver.

What does this mean to you, as the listener? The end result is a significant reduction of BL induced distortion (the #1 cause of distortion in subwoofers). The under-hung design also greatly reduces the variation of inductance over stroke; which is another major cause of loudspeaker distortion. When combined with the proven low distortion spider and surround borrowed from it's big brother the SA-8 v.2 (of course with half the number of spiders) the SD-2 8" is a truly reference level sound quality driver addressing the reduction all three major modes of distortion. Customers all over the world are constantly surprised by the level of ourput and fidelity these drivers provide.

The parameter set has been optimized for very small sealed enclosures ranging from 0.25 to 0.50 cubic feet. This makes the SD-2 8" the best 8" woofer in our line, and the only one I suggest, for sealed enclosures.

Xmax = 14.5mm one-way by 70% BL
RMS Power = 300-watts
And here are the specs.

Fs: 45.2 Hz
Re: 6.03 ohms
Qms: 7.31
Qes: 0.63
Qts: 0.58
Cms: 138 uM/N
Mms: 89 g
BL: 15.55 NA
Vas: 7.74 L
Sens: 82.29 dB 1w/1m
Le: 6.26 mH
RMS: 300 watts

Going to put them in a sealed box in my single cab F150. Should get pretty loud while still sounding good.

Not enough space.

Local custom audio shop installed marine sub in factory Bose spot. Basically open air since its a marine sub. Got 250amp installed in "glove box" behind passenger seat to keep everything tucked away. Goal wasn't to blow anybody away, but perfect sub to crank up and keep mild.
