Let the hushmat begin!
First the ceiling:
Starting the trunk
Doing the doors the right way. Removing the glass and the outer metal shell makes room for doing the outside of the doors. It makes a massive difference!
I even did underneath the knee bolster..its metal on metal so it had to be done!
Removed the seats and vacuumed like a madman! I will be removing the carpet as well
Removed the bumper to add some hushmat on the back part as well as the bumper skin. I hate rattling bumpers.
My first actual electronic install on my car (besides my Compustar)!
Me checking out my mat job in the trunk
MANY more pictures to come over the next couple of months!

Yeah, the weight is a concern but I am an audio guy both in hobby and in the work I do for a living. So far I have used about 45 lbs of hushmat. I estimate that by the end of all this I will have about 70-75 lbs of it in my car. Yes, its quite a bit but so far it has made an amazing difference in reducing road noise, exhaust noise (RS-R Exmag to be precise) and of course the notorious rattle.
Do I have to go as extreme as this? Probably not. The pictures will help with the presentation in competition (IASCA) and it will help with the testing.
Here are my audio plans:
- 6.5" Digital Designs German Components up front with a Hybrid Audio or Seas 4" driver. 6.5 in a door pod, the mid and tweet in A-piller pods
- Two Digital Designs 9110 10" subs in a custom fibreglass enclosure in the spare tire well
- Digital Designs M3 for the sub, 2X DD C2 amplifiers for the mids and midbasses, 1X DD C1 for the tweets. All amps running full active
- Audiocontrol DQXS Equalizer
- JVC KW-NX7000 Navigation deck with DVD player with 2nd zone output
- Alpine TMEM-770 bare screen in the cubby for movies (as pictured)
- Kinetik HC-1800 battery
- Motorized amp rack (maybe) for the M3 amp.
Thats about it for now that I have incorporated into my design. Its going to be pretty sweet.

Hushmat is not cheap. Its Poly-butyl so it is similar to dynamat Extreme. It is NOT tar based like most cheaper products out there so it'll never come off and it won't stink either. It runs about $10 a square foot retail usually.

I really like what you are doing in the initial-prep stage.
By the far the weakest part of the Z for good acoustics is its horrible “sound-intrusion-points.” The car is awful for vibrations through the doors, loud wheel-well incursion, significant racket coming through the coupe’s cargo floor, and all the noise you get from the compartment-pedestal behind the driver and passenger seat. I see that you are also dealing with the headliner space.
The Z definitely needs a bunch of sound deadening, and you are doing just that.
I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of your project.

In case anybody was thinking that I was crazy for taking out the windows it was actually fairly easy. The only thing that was a pain was aligning them back up so they had enough room to auto close when you close the door. My advice? Mark off where the bolts were holding the window with a scribe or a fine felt pen so its easier to line up when you put them back on.
Now is a great time to do a fully thorough window cleaning!
**Remember! Have a buddy help you remove and re-install the window! Its a little awkward and potentially dangerous if you try and do it yourself.**

One question. I noticed that you have the OEM navigation system, well at least you still have the unit in your rear deck. Are you running or planning on running the OEM navigation off of the TME-M770 screen? I also noticed that in your list of planned modifications that you have the KW-NX7000 listed so perhaps you plan on eighty sixing the OEM navigation unit.

It'll make for a really concise and complete entertainment system.
