Just to do a bit of thread mining.....
The price of the Z here is relative to other vehicles. All cars sold in Australia have LCT (25%) on the amount over $57k and then GST (10%) added to the total.
When I decided to buy my Z I did a LOT of research on price, resale, usability, reliability and performance.
My previous three cars were FPV GT-P, FPV F6 and then another F6. While these vehicles are very powerful and quick in a straight line they are not so good in corners, eat lots of petrol and have very bad resale retention.
My technical parameters were:
At least 2 seats
More than 600km fuel range
Rear wheel drive
Manual transmission
Good brakes
Rear wheel drive
Reasionably quick
Reasionably good fuel economy
Reliable.
Rear wheel drive
Tin top (I live in the skin cancer capital of the world)
ummmm
Did I mention rear wheel drive?
The short list was:
FPV GT-E $80k
FPV F6 $80k
HSV GTS $80k
350Z $70k
RX8 $55k
BMW 335 $130k
Crossfire SRT $80k
The FPVs and HSV was discounted early as they are petrol eating monsters and are not the most reliable cars on he road with terrible resale retention. While the F6 is an EXTREMELY quick vehicle, the new model has been delayed yet again and I would have been walking or driving the same as my old one for at least 6 months.
The crossfire was only available in auto or was underpowered in manual while the BMW was just a bit too expensive.
This left the RX8 and 350Z. The RX8 was quite nice although a bit underpowered but when I borrowed one over a weekend I used a tank of petrol just driving around locally. Power of a V8 with economy of a 4 is good, the other way round is not so good.
This left the 350Z. I looked at the price of second hand ones and even the really old ones still command high prices. A friend of mine bought the first one ever sold here and she has never had a warranty claim or fault ever.
So at AU$70k, to me, the 350Z is excellent value. Yes the US one is US$38k (not $28k, we don't have the povvo models here) but if you convert it to AUD, add duty, GST and LCT it is not going to be a much cheaper AND the steering wheel is on the wrong side.
P.S. I only paid $63k drive away........4/2008 Track Coupe
