Default What Tires to use for Autocrossing ?

I have been autocrossing a RSX type S for the past year. I used Falkens but they don't make the tire in an 18 inch size. I would like to autocross my Track Model Z but don't want to use the tires it came with(heard they weren't good in the corners).

For those of you in the know ..... what would be a good tire to start out with ?

I will be running on the Hoosier R3S03 245/35/18 from Tire Rack

Khumo Makes the Ecsta V700 in a 225/40/18 for front but the next size up is 265/35/18 and I don't know if the 265 will fit on the rear wheels.

I did go to the tire rack but can't use the Hoosier since they are not DOT and I want to stay in the stock class ..

It does look like the Bridgestone Potenza S-02 should work very nicely. I am thinking 245/40 in the front and 275/40 in the rear. What is your thought on this ?

The hoosiers are DOT legal race tires and will not bump you out of stock. Look @ Tire Rack Website

tread depth of just 4/32" you are absolutely right but I need to beable to drive these on the street (back and forth to work and to the autocross. I don't have the luxury of have two sets of rims or a trailer.

Not a streetable tire for sure wouldn't last long. The khumo tires are OK on daily driving and still better than average on track. I run the khumo Victoracer on my 88 300ZX Race Cars and they are pretty good. I tried the Ecsta V700 but was not as happy with them as the Victo's. Unfortunatly they don't make an 18" in the Victoracers.

don't know if they have the particular sizes you want, but a good dual purpose tire is the new Kumho Ecsta MX; they kick butt for a street tire (grippier than S02's) and are reasonably priced. Check them out at the Tirerack site

Bridgestone Potenza S0-2's are awesome high-performance street tires, but they still don't hold a candle to a true DOT r-compound tire like Hoosiers or V700s.

Track wheels are 18x8, with 225/45/18 front and 245/45/18 rear.

Hoosier A3S03's come in 225/45/18 and 245/40/18.

Hoosier R3S03's come in 225/45/18 and 245/45/18.

Kumho Victoracer V700s only go up to 17". Like OKC-Silverstone-Trac said, Kumho Ecsta V700s only do 225/40/18 and 265/35/18.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cups also only do the 225 and 265 thing.

Looks like the R3S03 is the way to go, except you really shouldn't drive to events on them. Honestly, I don't see a good tire that you can run, without changing wheels and moving out of stock class.

Your second choice, indeed, would be to simply run high-performance street tires like the S02. You won't be as competitive, but you'll still have fun.

OK, I think I found the tire that I want to use "Yokohama AVS Sport"! I bought a pair of 255/45ZR-18 99Y and mounted them on the back. I then tested them last night at a known spot and found them to be awsome for straight line stuff. A little corner tested left me to believe they will be great as a daily driven autocrossing tire.

Now I need to figure out what size to put on the front ? they don't come in 225/45 but do come in 245/40, 235/50, 265/35. I was thinking maybe a 265/35 might be a good choice ?

Need the guru's to tell me if it is better to go wider and lower profile or a narrower and higher profile ....... still keeping the stock tire hieght ?

I would go with a 245/40, which would be very close to stock.

If you went with 265/35, would you put those in back and the 255's in front, or would you have the 255's in back with 265's in front?

For some reason it seems weird to me to have the larger tire in front on a rear wheel drive car. Not sure exactly why though.

I was thinking that the 265/35 for the front would be better. they are the same height as stock but a whole lot wider .... and wider should be better ?

Can you go with wider tires than stock and still drive in the stock class? I want to get into scca autocross this year, but I would like to stay in the stock class when I purchase new tires. What can you change? Width, profile, diameter, etc? Any of those, or none?

I was thinking about the toyo proxes TS-1s. They make stock size tires for the rear (track model), but the closest they have in stock width is 225/40ZR18 92WRD .

As far as I know, you can run any size tire you want, as long as you use the same size wheel as the stocks for your model.

That would be:
17x7.5 Front
17x8 Rear
For Base, Enth, and Touring 5AT

18x8 F
18x8 R
For Performance and Touring 6MT

18x8 F
18x8.5 R
Track

Yes, tyre size is open. Wheels have to remain the same width and diameter, and offset must be within + or - ¼".

I would recommend buying a rulebook. They're cheap and will take a lot of the guesswork about what you can and cant do to your car.

Cheers,
Brian.

It's hard to believe with all the autocross gurus on this forum that no one can suggest the best duel purpose tire for the Z. If it was an RSX I could come right out and say get the Falken. I guess I will just have to hope they make my size in the next month

The problem is. The real autocross gurus don't run dual purpose tyres. I would recommend the Falken, but I know that they aren't made in the correct size. Try the Bridgestone's, they work extremely well on the street, therefore I would imagine that they could cross over to Solo fairly well.

We all run Hoosiers & Kumhos, what can I say? I wish there was more that we could do.

Cheers,
Brian.

Here Here......Hoosiers For Everyone.......

What wheels are you going with Brian? I think I may have some sponsorship this year and hope they will spring for another set of Rays.

I'll probably mount some Hoosiers on the stock set of Rays wheels. I'm going to keep an eye out for a set of used factory 18's. If I find a set of standard 18's I'll keep them as run-around wheels and use my stock Ray's for Solo. If the heavens open and I find a set of used Rays, or if someone like SSR produces a lightweight wheel in the right size, I'll go that direction.

Right now, most of my attention is going to shocks. I've decided not to mess around this year. I'm going to make the car as competitive as I can. I'm tired of getting beat by a better car.

Cheers,
Brian.
