Power Steering Issues at the Track
Hey guys,
So I had a another track day this weekend, and had issues with my power steering. The day before the nut that secures one of my idler tensioners just disappeared during the drive, so I had to drive 30 mins with no power steering all the way home. When I got home I fixed the issue, re-installed the belt, and topped the power steering.
I just didn't have time to do a drain and fill, the track day was in like 10 hours away, and I didn't have enough fluid.
The first session was fine, then the second session I started loosing the power steering on-and-off. I got power steering fluid sprayed all over the passenger side of the engine bay. I was so weird because I would loose power steering, then it would come back. I pulled into the pit, and notice that one of the hose fittings was off. I tightened the fitting thinking I had solved the problem, but after I went back out, I lost it again during the second turn, so I just called it a day.
I was wondering if you guys can identify what happened just by that description. Did the fluid just cook while I didn't have power steering due to the belt being off? Could that be caused by air in the system? Do I need a new pump? I read something about steering angle sensors, tie-rods, rack & pinion??
Btw I am back to NA, so the vortech is no longer a variable on this.
I will be adding an aftermarket power steering cooler to the system once I drain it. Would this be a good option?

That model came from the thread below:

A few pics from the track day, to thank you for helping me
Only action pic... I actually ate that M3 right after this turn. Most exciting pass of the day!
Got to ride in this GT3 for a full session... what a crazy difference there is between a real high end sports car and our Z/Gs.... Amazing experience though, never thought a car could be pushed to such limits!

I'd suggest you go through Nissan Motorsports and see if they still offer part #49790-RSV30US, the NISMO R-Tune power steering cooler kit. It's about 40% bigger than the OEM cooler, but fits right in the same area and uses the same fittings. Haven't had a lick of trouble on my SCCA T2/T3 Z33 after installing it.
As to what happened to your PS pump after it ran dry, I haven't a clue.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hda-1010/overview/ is what I once ran, worked well but the OEM location takes a hell of a beating.
Now I run this little guy http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-70265/overview/ , it takes the biggest rocks and have yet to bend a fin.

Thanks guys, I appreciated it.
I rather go with a Hayden vs. a Nismo since the Nismo is a lot more expensive than the comparable models from other racing brands. I don't need the direct fit.
Terrasmak,
It seems that the Hayden that you picked is the same in/out dimensions than the other Hayden model that is the same price (inlet size 3/8, outlet 3/8, , but the other one is thicker and larger (height: 5in vs 2.5in, width: 12.5 vs 12, number of cooling rows: 4 vs 2, core width/thickness: the same).
Do you see any disadvantages on using the model below?

Yeah lol it was bigger, but it was cheaper, more cooling capacity, and it was already PC'ed black so that is best for my setup. It will go right on the passenger side bumper opening that you can see in the pic below, so being a little larger than optimal is okay since it's not covering anything (Windshield wiper system that was there before is gone), as long as it's not heavier, which was not the case
I will also re-utilizing this as the PS cooler for the LS6 Swap (Sept), so I figured the increased capacity might be good
