Been a couple of weeks since last update and I talked to David this morning.
Recovery is slow and tiring but he's in good spirits. The crux of our convo in his words:
"Hey Mic- sorry for the delay, but every day is a bit of an adventure. Today is a good example, just feeling worn out, despite 10 hours of sleep! Healing takes time and is one reason why I haven't resumed posting on the boards. Cold, overcast weather here in Denver today- starting to wish for some warmer climes in the future!"
I chided him with, "Dude, you can't rush to get through this like a race corner!"
Been home since just after the new year. Need to give a round of applause to his wife Kathy, who's been taking good care of him throughout this whole thing.
Glad hes on the good. Now id like more information on this q60 that was involved..
Chris, I'm sworn to secrecy on this so we'll have to wait until he gets back to posting to hear what he has or can say. The one thing I can say is he told me to assure everyone that the Q60 is a bitchin' ride (my words, not his) despite the incident. That is, "Don't hesitate to buy one because it IS an amazing car."
He's moving from in-home physical therapy to out-patient PT! Always a good sign in a recovery from a shunt of this magnitude! Keep the well wishes coming as I'm sure he'll see them soon.
Speaking of the accident itself and to give you some idea of the extent of the damage, David forwarded me these pics of his noggin protector that likely saved him from even worse injuries:
You might notice some irony here.... he's got the HANS device sticker on the visor but he wasn't able to actually wear his because of the three point safety belt he had on. Ugh.
His description:

Uhhhhhh..... ew.
But yeah, I love that design! "Stars and Stripes meeting the Rays of the rising sun". Such a telling story in graphics!
In any event, it's great to hear he's progressing according to schedule.
Working out daily with naps and meals in between doesn't sound so bad, eh? Laff. Nahhh, he's on a pretty grueling PT schedule but aside from him getting a little cabin fever from being cooped up, he's movin' right along on the road to recovery!
And that road is full of late brake, early apex, and no-air-under-the-right-pedal exits. Keep on, David!
His latests scans and tests have indicated that no further surgery is required to fix him up! (The human equivalent of "Naw, don't need to pull the heads, just drop in some Marvel Mystery Oil every few thou!") Most excellent! Still doing PT and fractures are healing nicely - and there's a whole bunch!
But in the meantime, in addition to Kathy taking care of him, he passes along a pic of his "home therapists"...
...that would be "Nizmo" and sister "Koda".
Heh, if I had dogs, the poor things would probably live with names like "Rays" and "Volkie".
Hey everybody- thanks for all the get-well wishes and good thoughts on this thread! A special note of thanks to MicVelo for continuing to post updates since the shunt. As for THAT, I'm afraid there's not much more I can say. With a pending legal case. I've been advised to shut my cake hole before the trial.
But my recovery is something I can share some details on. The reality is fatigue and pain continue to spoil that scenario of "naps and meals" at home. Today I freakin' sneezed and felt the ice pick hit me right in the center of the chest where the fractured sternum continues to heal. Not a feeling to recommend...although it DOES make me wonder why we have any nerve endings in that particular area!?
Latest prognosis continues to be encouraging as the multiple fractures continue to heal, but the reality is I'll need a followup exam after six months to even determine what my motorsports future will be. After a thirty-plus year career in racing and performance driving, this shunt puts that all into doubt. On the other hand, I've recently passed three other tests (primarily cognition, coordination and balance) to get back towards driving. Unfortunately--between winter weather and lack of flexibility--it's going to be awhile before I can even SIT in my beloved Redline track model. Looking forward to the day driving my Z happens!

How about some sim racing to tide you over, (haha) there's a article on it in the latest Grassroots magazine.

I don't have any experience driving a car at high speeds into a wall but I have spent some weeks in bed on pain medications that keep me drowsy... Not fun
Anyways don't know if it will help but I got one of these for my back a few months ago and I'll say it was worth every penny.
