DIY: OEM spoiler removal
I just recently removed the oem spoiler to install a new blitz spoiler and thought I provide some useful tips for anyone looking to do this.
Tools Needed:
1) 3M eraser wheel, part #: 3612. Can be found at advance auto or get it off of amazon for a bit cheaper. It is a bit pricey for just a wheel but this alone will be a HUGE time saver. I honestly couldn't of done it without this.
2) 3M adhesive remover, part #:3618
3) Thick fishing line or a thin dress shoe lace
4) Drill
5) Shop vac
6) Masking tape
7) Emblem adhesive to cover up holes with plastic caps
*Optional: 3M adhesion promoter, part #:6396, if you plan on installing a new spoiler
Steps:
1) Pry and remove the trunk plastic covering so you can access the 2 nuts that hold the spoiler. There are 2 studs with nuts and 2 plastic retaining clip things
2) Remove 2 nuts, 1 on each side of the spoiler. You'll see them through the big holes underneath the spoiler.
3) Use a thick finishing line or thin dress shoe lace and begin sawing through the adhesive gunk
4) Once you reach the 1st stud, lift the spoiler just enough so you can maneuver the fishing line/shoe lace underneath it. An extra set of hands here would help but it can be done by yourself.
5) Continue sawing through and do the same when you reach the 2 plastic retaining clips and the last stud.
6) After the spoiler is off, spray on some 3M adhesive remover onto the areas effected and wait a few minutes.
7) Mask off emblems with masking tape so adhesive bits don't get trapped in them.
8) Pull out your drill, attach the eraser wheel, and begin carefully applying it to the leftover adhesive. Keep the RPM of the drill low around 500 - 2500 RPM.
9) Lightly clean up the left over adhesive with the shop vac or just run it over with a hose
10) Use 3M adhesive remover/eraser wheel again to do a final clean up
11) I used some small plastic push in caps that were laying around, about the size of a nickel and applied emblem adhesive to cover up the 2 holes. I'm sure there are some similar at parts stores but I don't have a part# for something like this.
12) Apply 3M adhesion promoter though not necessary, if you plan installing a new spoiler.
