Default Torque Wrench for Brake Caliper Removal

Hey guys, really stupid question alert: I am going to be replacing my brake pads pretty soon and I need to buy a torque wrench. The one I'm looking at is 18" long, is that too long to get in behind the calipers and properly torque the two bolts holding them on? It looks pretty tight back there, but I can't tell if there's enough room for a longer torque wrench with the handle pointing down.

Thanks in advance!

No. Either turn the front wheels or if its the rear jack it up higher or use a swivel

You don't need a torque wrench for either type of OEM calipers, at least if you're just changing pads. When I had the OEM non-Brembo's, I just used an ordinary 1/2" drive ratchet wrench, and have been for maybe 35 years on other floating calipers, too.

I'm kinda with dcains, torque wrench is definitely the proper way to do everything but I always just judge it by hand when doing brakes.

We're just talking about the guide pins here, not the caliper mounting bolts. I think the spec for the guide bolts is ~20 lb/ft, so just get them moderately snug with a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet and you're fine.

Like everybody else said. No need for a torque wrench. Do it my hand. Nice and snug.

Yes an 18" torque wrench can be used on the two caliper bolts. I have used one each and every time.

Lots men eschew the use of torque wrenches for non-critical fasteners because of their long experience of just ‘doing it by hand nice and snug’. Lots of professional mechanics are also in this camp. However, large-scale studies have shown that they tend to over torque small bolts while under torquing large nuts and bolts etc. Try it yourself you’ll be amazed at the results.

Squalz, you make it sound like I think all men are obtuse, but I don’t. Ok, maybe some men, on some of the Internets, but certainly not here. Well maybe some parts of here, but definitely not this part, well maybe some parts of this part, but not your part, well maybe some parts of your part, but not the important parts.
