"real people payments" depend on a lot of different factors, mostly how long the loan term, how big a down payment they make, and how strong their credit is.

If you really want a realistic number, visit a local bank, or a credit union. They will be happy to qulify you and give you a very precise figure, based on your personal circumstances.

From the numbers point of view here is a couple rules of thumb

Total car payments should not exceed 12 percent of your net income

Cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles and other vehicles’ total value should be less than half your annual income

I looked around on some sites today and found two conflicting numbers for the "average" loan amount for a car.

they are:
"
The average car payment is $378 over 63 months

The average monthly new car payment dropped from $466 per month for cars sold in October 2002 to $447 per month for cars sold in October 2003, according to Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information."

Personally for me I don't have a payment right now. I am saving for my Z and hope to have enough by august to get my payment under 400 for 48 months. If I don't hit that goal I will keep on saving till my current car craps out or I have enough.

As far as the debate between the z and rx8 that is my debate and not the worlds debate between the sti/evo. Yes i am into the looks and im not looking to build more cars. I just want to enjoy a nice car with good power.
