i am in the market for a Z, and am looking at 05-06 models.
question is how important is milage vs year vs model?
i find some nice 05's with a few mods and well equipped, but usually have more miles. i can find base model 06's, bone stock, for the same money, with less miles.
which is a better buy? for fun? or resale? reliability?

a well maintained car w/ records at 40k miles is a better buy then a newer car that was beat on with 20k miles and no maintenance records.
performance mods to me are just an indicator that the owner drove it harder.
base models are lame, no LSD? no cruise control? not for me.
some 06s are prone to oil consumption, manual transmission only.
base models are cheaper for a reason. what cars are you comparing? give us something to work with. listed price doesn't mean much. what price range are you looking at? could you squeeze in an 07? the hr engine is a nice improvement.
You will not find a significant difference between 2005 and 2006. If offered a 2005 with 40,000 miles and a 2006 with 80,000 miles, I would choose the 2005.
One that's still under warranty, so a late 2006 (or an 05' long-time leftover) with less than 36k miles is my suggestion. Nissan and/or Carfax can tell you when the vehicle was first registered, so add 36 months from that date.
If that's too rich, certainly get one within the 5/60 powertrain, as you may be buying an oil burner.

don't settle on a transmission choice if you have your heart set on one or the other.
I personally wouldn't get a base model because I want and need a limited slip differential. traction control was another factor, for driving in the rain, but not a huge concern. the other options are all just icing on the cake, **** I don't care about, hence why I went with an enthusiast and not a touring or grand touring. a friend of mine ragged on me for not getting a GT... but you know what? I don't like leather. I don't need brembos, I wanted to make my own aftermarket audio setup etc.. wasn't worth the cost to me.
is it to you? that's what you should figure out. once you can distinguish the factory options between the different model levels you should feel more confident in which setup you'd like the most.
i drove an auto today and it wasnt bad. i could live with that. slap it to manual for fun, then back when i get lazy.
as for options....nothing is mandatory really, i would do my own stereo anyway if it wasnt bose already, leather is nice, but dont care about, no need for brembos, hell i guess the tcs isnt "necessary", as its not a daily driver and i live in florida

I personaly wouldnt go with a 06 because of oil consumption. The 03's and 04's made before 04.5 may have tire feathering and few other small issues. I would go with a 04.5, 05, 07, or a 08. Just my 2 cents. Goodluck with finding one.
