Looks like I will most likely have to go out of state to find a Z. What should I look out for when I do this? Should I try to negotiate over the phone? What can I do to make sure they don't try to screw me when I get there? TIA

Dont know how it is in your state - but if you purchase a car out of state and bring it into Arizona - they hook you for the sales tax here when you register it. If you are making a deal via internet or mail - would get it solid in writing before going there to pick it up.- - then it it's a Nissan dealer - should be no problem.
I bought an S-10 out of state, and bought my Z out of state. There are a couple different ways of doing it. You can negotiate before you get there, thats what I did with the Z, actually, it was a preorder. The S-10 I saw on a lot while visiting my father-in-law. I bought the truck in Mo., and paid no sales tax at all on it. They gave me the MSO (the manufacturers statement of origin), which I took to the DMV to exchange for a title, and 2 weeks later, they sent me a bill for the sales tax.
With the Z, it was a north carolina dealership and they did all the legwork for a Georgia registration, collected my counties sales tax and sent all the paperwork into my state for me. 2 weeks later, my plates showed up. I think that was well above what most dealers would do, you will probably end up with my first scenario.
