My internet is slow... and downloading issues..

Alright, I have no idea what is going on, does not matter what URL I put in the address bar, I am getting really slow connection, and a really slow download speed, with and without the use of Flashget. I ran a speed test, and the results are posted below, so right now I am confused as to why it is going so slow. I have tried downloading from various sources, but still result in the same 7-60kb/s speed, opposed to 1800kb/s. I have tried resetting my modem, and directly connecting my modem straight to my desktop, instead of modem to router, to desktop. I am always directly connected, on my desktop. I have also noticed the slow speeds on my laptops, Mac and Vista. My desktop is XP.

If someone could please help me, I would appreciate it.

You may have to call your isp. My connection used to always drop randomly. I tried resetting my modem multiple times. I finally got so annoyed and called them. They did something, and it hasn't dropped since (4 months ago).

Anyways, call them up and see what they say.

No, that was DURING the time of slow internet and slow downloading speeds, which makes no sense to me.

why don't you try to portfoward. You can find guide on how to portfoward. Also did you try to resret your router if you have one or diconnect your internet then try to reconnect it.

Sounds to me like DNS resolution issues.

No matter how fast your connection is, if your computer can't resolve an internet address name to an actual IP, your computer will sit there and wait until it finally gets that info.

my test results:

2945 download
480 upload
isp: road runner
ping: 41
distance: 50

try this:

right click on network connections> click properties

right click on local area connections>CLICK properties

you'll see "connect using:" then it would name your ethernet connection

click configure> advance tab> link speed/duplex mode>

to the right set your value, on my laptop i have it set as 100mb full duplex

on my desktop i have it set as 1gb full duplex

see if this works

I tried that, but it's completely different. It asks me autonegotiate etc. so I said forget it.

But it seems that its resolved now, it seems back to normal. I dont know what was wrong.

Have your isp do a line test to your modem, if everything shows up fine you can pretty much guarantee its something on your internal lan/computer.

If you can borrow someones laptop that might help. Also do you have a wifi router in between your modem and your computer? try connecting directly into the modem and see if you still experience problems.

After 10 years of dial-up I finally went to cable. Very impressed with the speed. Is this poor, average, good? Are the test results valid?

Try here: www.speedtest.net

If at all possible, try to avoid using wireless unless you have to. Wired connections will be faster and more stable.

sounds like a spyware issue, not an ISP issue.

step 1) run this test: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

- depending on who is your provided check their site and check what your internet should be getting.

Bellsouth for example has 4 speeds if i recall:
a) 768/256
b) 1.5/512
c) 3.0/1.0
d) 6.0/2.0

step 2) run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

- free online virus, maleware, spyware test and removal. quite decent.
