Anyway to install windows XP over Windows XP?

OK I got a good XP now and not a bootleg one but my question is! Is there anyway to load XP over the old XP with the new serial number without formatting or losing all the info I have on the PC? My dad has over 300GB's of business stuff and I can't loose that ****.

500 GB external HDD is your friend, back that ish up!! Then install fresh "legit" copy and you're good!

I don't think you can go from corp, I'm assuming here to vanilla XP... But I may be wrong.

That's the thing he has stuff like games (WOW) that can't be backed up that is the problem. I have a 1 TB external HD but can't backup the games.

In the text box in the Run window, type regedit and click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder under My Computer and click on the (+) sign next the folder name to expand the folder.

Continue to expand folders until you reach the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents registry key.

Click on the WPAEvents folder.

In the results that appear in the window on the right, locate OOBETimer.

Right-click on the OOBETimer entry and choose Modify from the resulting menu.

Change at least one digit in the Value data text box and click OK. This will deactivate Windows XP.

Click on Start and then Run.

In the text box in the Run window, type the following command and click OK.

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

When the Windows Product Activation window appears, choose Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows and then click Next.

Click Change Product Key.

Type your new, valid Windows XP product key in the New key text boxes and then click Update.

If you're taken back to the previous screen and prompted, choose Remind me later.

Restart your PC.

i'm not sure if a repair will prompt you for ro the key again or not, if it was home you could "upgrade" to profesional without changing anything. if its pro to pro, you should be able to just enter a new serial key (google for steps if you dont know how).

i would recommend a fresh reformatted install with every operating system installation, you should back up your information anyway when you do that, so you might as well back it up and do it right...

Hey also if it works I need to install SP1 it's not going to delete or mess anything up installing SP1 right?

WOW can be backed up. It does not need to be installed to work. It can run ffrom just having the folder.

Try the registry edit like mentioned before.

If that doesn't work...

You can reinstall XP under a "repair" and it will prompt you for the serial number. This is where you can enter in the new serial number.

it may not work just an fyi, it has to be the exact same version of XP.

For example if you have purchased a retail copy of windows xp and you try to change the key to a windows xp key that came with your dell it more than likely wont work.
