Remote Desktop

Trying to setup something between a few of my computers.

I have a desktop stationed at my Moms house (45min drive) and I have my laptop at my house. I would like to use remote desktop to connect to that computer and do anything that is needed on that computer.

How can I establish such a setup without needing someone at the other computer to accept the invitation and allow me to take control of the computer.

thanks

You could put a VNC server on your mom's machine and a VNC client on yours.
A "for instance" is Vine server and you could use Chicken of the VNC for the client. Both are freebies.

Way to complicated.

Just allow remote connection on the computer you are trying to connect to via:

right click my computer
properties
remote
check: Allow users to connect remotely to this computer

If they are behind a firewall (Linksys most common) then you will need to configure port forwarding on port 3389 from the router primary IP to the private IP of the computer your connecting to.

then just type mstsc in run and connect to the public IP followed by :3389 (RDP)

You will be prompted to login so ensure you the account you use is an administrative account.

I'd have to think that would open up a pretty massive hole into her computer. Oh yeah, I mean another hole, it's Windows after all.

No, its not. All servers in a web hosting environment use these settings.

Gotcha I'll give this a try.

I had VNC before and used it but hadn't set it up from different computers that aren't on the same network. Going to try setting up these setting and see if that works.

or next time you are at your mom's house, download LogMeIn free onto her computer. Then you can log into her pc from anywhere in the world. You would just go to LogMeIn.com and type in your username and password and can access any computer you have setup under your account.

I used this for tons of customer PCs when I had my own IT Consulting business...the free version works great.

Actually no they don't. It is highly recommended to change that port in the registry to something other than 3389. Which we have done on all our servers.

+1

3389 just gives away that you can RD into the machine. I changed mine on my desktop when I was using RD.

remote desktop will work fine (i've set this up on several computers), but you need something that will tunnel one internet connection into the other.

I recommend using a free program called Hamachi, it sets up a VPN (virtual private network) amongst any number of computers anywhere on the globe. It basically makes the computers as if they are networked behind the same router.

Once you setup Hamachi (which is basically config-free), then set the host computer to allow incoming remote desktop connections, this is in the "remote" tab under "System" in control panel.

Then make a note of the COMPUTER NAME on the network. you might want to set it to something easy to remember.

Then you need to make a PASSWORD for the account on the host computer otherwise remote desktop may not work.

Finally, log all the computers into the same VPN on Hamachi, and load up remote desktop, then when you connect, just type in the COMPUTER NAME into the remote desktop connection

I do this and it works alright, but if the internet connections are slow, then it will be painful to use.

I have used all of the recommended solutions in this thread. The easiest, trouble-free method is using logmein free. I have this on about 200 computers and it works great. Simple to use, logs all activity, she can disable it if she wants, nobody has to be at the computer when you log in, and very secure. The Hamachi is a VPN software and is really not for the RDC. You can use RDC without it, is what I mean. Hamachi is great. I have it between my office and my home and I no longer have to keep multiple copies of all work files and I don't have to keep track of updating every time we change something. For this application, however, logmein free is the best IMHO.
