Cisco Certs

Hey guys, quick question. I am about to be a sophomore in college, studying computer science. I friend of mines dad is some kind of engineer, working in the telecommunications industry. I was talking to his dad, and he recommended that I go buy a book and start studying for the CCNA certification. He said that if I were to study and get this cert, then I would have a huge advantage over other people graduating from college, and that I could also get a $20/hr job while still in school. I have been trying to do some research about this and found nothing to back up what he said. Does anybody know?

Ya, depending on what I find out here, and what happens after I get CCNA, I may or may not pursue CCNP after that.

I think my buddy explained to me was the CCNA being 40s, maybe 50s while the CCNP would be around the 60s.

A ccna will not get you 40s.

All you need to know is Visual Foxpro 9 and good knowledge on MS SQL 2000 & 2005. You'll be in good shape.

LOL

Hehe..I figured that was too much.

Well, from experience certs alone wouldn't get you much. Experience counts the most but if you have cert and experinece, then that's best.

Cisco has made the ccna much harder to get. They also separated into different concentrations: wireless, security, routing and switchng and voice. CCENT (cisco certified entry network technician) is now the entry level for cisco. It used to be CCNA.

They have also made the CCNP much tougher. You will most likely won't pass the 4 exams (3 if you take the composite) unless you have serveral years of experience under your belt.

Yeah, I'm gonna shoot for the CCNA still hopefully sometime before I graduate next year. I'll have 5-6 years of experience in the IT field so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Go for it. I have no idea what these cert's are about and i dont know how long you would have to study for the tests. It is possible to get an interenship while in school and you should. The end of my Jr yr feb until nov senior yr i held a tech internship paying 16.57/hr. That was good as it fit into my school schedule nad was a good resume booster, i think and it didn't hurt.

I have 7 years experience, have down Cisco's Academy classes but didn't follow up and get the actual CCNA cert. I am making $36,000 at my current job and just started the end of February & I already have gotten 2 raises. Experience is key and being able to prove your knowledge once you get hired is better. Certs will help if you have no experience or if they are looking at someone else with your same experience.

I plan on getting the certs now that my new job will pay for everything...just have to make time and brush up on the specifics for the current tests...

When it comes to tech i think we need to stop grouping everything 'IT' related together.

What about a CS degree plus certs coming right out of school. Would that give me a good advantage over other people just graduating?

What classes are you taking in your Comp Sci degree? I assume there is a specific direction that the CS degree will take you. If your colleges program relates to CISCO cert's then it will help you.

More info needed

I know the CS program at LSU doesn't do it, I can't imagine many colleges requiring it as far as CS degrees.
