Windows Activation Code
I have a legit copy of Windows XP from my old computer. I'm trying to install it on my new computer, but its asking me for and activation code. Product key works fine and everything, I just need the damn Activation Key. I called Windows support and they said they cannot give it to me, I would have to buy a new copy of windows.
Does anyone know how i can obtain this activation key? |

no, heres what u do
call MS tell them exactly what happened. They will ask you to read the code the activation thing gives you. They will then give you a good code which will activate it. i have done this a million times

Now it all depends on what u call a legit copy. was it a dell/hp restore disk with a full version of XP or is it a copy that was purchased in the store aside from the pc? If it's a restore disk WPA kill might be the only thing that'll work but will not allow any updates..

If you're trying to move an OEM license key to another computer, it is not a legit copy. OEM licenses are only for use on the original computer it was installed on. You can't legally move it to another computer.

did you already format over your old partition? if not try this:
1. Double-click My Computer 2. Double-click on the "C" drive 3. Go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder (you may have to click on the link that says "Show The contents of this folder") 4. Find the files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" and copy them to a safe location. You can copy them on a floppy drive or burn it onto a CD or DVD. 5. After you have reinstalled Windows XP on your reformatted hard drive, click "No" when asked if you want to go ahead and go through the activation process 6. Reboot your computer into SafeMode (you can either press F8 as Windows is booting up to see the Windows Advanced Options menu and select SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal or follow the instructions in Starting Windows XP in SafeMode 7. Double-click My Computer 8. Double-click on the "C" drive 9. Go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder (you may have to click on the link that says "Show The contents of this folder") 10. Find the file "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (if it exists) and rename them to "wpadbl.new" and "wpabak.new" 11. Copy your original "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" files from your floppy disk, CD or DVD into the C:\Windows\System32 folder 12. Restart your system (if you followed the directions in Starting Windows XP in SafeMode you may need to go back into MSCONFIG to turn off booting into SafeMode) http://netsecurity.about.com/od/wind...twinxp0829.htm |

I ran into this too.....I had a legit copy of XP that I bought for an old PC that I had since parted out and sh!tcanned. I found out that Microsoft changed their policies and activation processes recently and they won't let you activate a copy of windows that had ever been activated before on another CPU. I just gave up on it finally because there was no way I was going to pay for it again so I just removed windows from VMware and don't miss it at all.

OEM licenses have always been tied to the computer they were first installed on. Retail licenses can be moved to as many computers as you please as long as it's only installed on one computer at a time.

I've called microsoft and said that I upgraded the RAM and changed the hard drive. If you have an activated computer and you change around some components it will require re-activation by calling microsoft. If you want to switch windows to another computer, you can call them and tell them that you just upgraded the ram and now it wants you to activate. It's always worked for me.

Just call Microsoft already, it is what a smart person would do. Remember to only give specific info, don't give more info than they ask for, just in case.
