ZOMG, I <3 my 1tb external

Writing at 100 - 135 MB/sec with eSATA. (even seen it go up to 175MB/sec for a few files)

Can't believe I waited so long to get this. I have so much stuff that needs backing up at home and at work.

Paired with this guy
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148274

Enclosure with USB 2.0 and eSATA and a nice quiet fan. It has some ricer blue LEDs on the fan but I could clip them off if it bugs me.

Mounting took about 5 mins, it's obviously config-free and fast... gotta love it. HD stays nice and cool with this enclosure even during long sustained writes. Only thing it's missing is firewire... but I'll get by with USB if I have to use it on a legacy SATA-free computer.

I went with the enclosure+OEM-HD instead of the retail-external-HD because now I can be assured the drive is a quality unit, and most of the retail ex-HDs have terrible reviews...

Great choice. I've had experience with good enclosures that had bad HDs inside. This is a great choice choose your enclosure and choose your HD, so your HD it covered with a 5 year warantee.

1TB would be fantastic, my 250mb external is a few gigs from being full. Wish i had an eSata connection.

Yeah I looked at them, almost bought one, but there were too many bad reviews. I decided to go with the custom setup since I've been having great experiences with the seagate drives lately.

heheh I love my new 750GB external SeaGate Free Agent Pro
But...at this point, although it has an eSATA port, my laptop can only hook up to it by the USB port.
Maybe my next computer will be able to utilize the eSATA capability.

What is the longest connection that can be used with this external HD that keeps the speed equivalent (or near) to an onboard HD?

I'm trying to create a remote storage HD for my clients, without using Microsoft Server, so that video footage is separate from the DVR. That way, if the DVR is stolen/vandalized/etc, the remote HD will have the latest footage of the perpetrator. The problem is, even using a gigabit switch with NAS, the connection doesn't seem fast enough to transfer the data from multiple cameras nearly as fast as an internal HD can get written to.

Why not find an NAS with dual gigabit ports and bridge them over CAT6 or fiber? I don't know how many cameras it would take to choke that connection but I'm assuming it would take a lot.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking for as economical a solution as possible, as the external/hidden HD is an appealing option for storage safety for many of my clients - but not if it is too pricey. I'm trying to determine what the best solution is for the least amount of money...it also requires a constant duty HD, due to the nature of video surveillance footage...

Look into Buffalo NAS units. They can be affordable. Not like 150 dollar affordable, but it's the right way to go about what you're trying to do.

Are you saying this would be in addition to the multiplexer's hard drive?

You can also look up "ethernet external hard drive" on google- there's quite a few units. I'd use amazon to scope out the reviews.

I could do this a couple different ways I suppose, including redesigning the DVR system (PC based) with a small HD to house the OS/basic functions, and the HD either being internal w/a redundant external HD, or simply have a completely external HD system. The problem I believe (with my limited knowledge: my techs are working on this) is the caching of the data in temp memory (cache size), and the length of time it takes to write to an external HD, along with the limitations in data transfer speeds over wires longer than 10 feet - we likely need the flexibility to put the data many feet away (ie: above the ceiling), and as such we need something other than ribbon cables.

We can adjust the cache sizes to write faster, and that's important, as what prompts the desire for a system of this type is if something incriminating is captured on video, causing the perp to go after the DVR - either taking it or destroying it. We need the video to be sent to the external HD as promptly as possible. Redundancy within the DVR would be nice, but not critical I'd imagine.

This would likely be used for a PC-based DVR; I don't think I could get it to work with an embedded DVR (and I'm not sure I can even get it to work with a PC-based system for reasonable money).

My hunch for price point acceptability (keeping in mind that this option is likely going to be most popular for businesses with a higher risk of being robbed, etc) is under $400.

Right now we are testing a NAS device hooked up to a gigabit switch w/ 13 cameras attached constantly recording @ 30fps, to see how bad the switch throttles the data stream. When we play back the video on Monday, we'll have our answer on that. A dual gigabit port NAS device is certainly interesting; I didn't know that was an option.

This borders on the line of economical but you could also have the PC compress the stream and upload it to a remote storage service. Good for customers who already have a large up pipe and a computer capable of compressing 30fps video from a few cameras.

Wow Acronis is awesome ... compressed about 600GB worth of stuff onto this external HD in about 3.5 hours and it only takes up 300GB of storage space.

I think we've discussed that, and concluded some downsides to it (IIRC image degradation/broadband throttling).

esata is rated up to 3gigs/second not sure who is actually hitting those speeds but I'd assume around 1-1.5 gig/sec is what you might see.

Some people need external storage for many different things, music, movies, video, video editing, etc...

I just wanted a huge storage vessel because I'm going to be collecting backup data from multiple computers, then backing up again on my RAID5 at home.

There's no way to do all this with flash drives. And running out of storage was not a good option either.

1TB gave me a lot of overhead to do whatever I wanted, even backup with zero compression if I need to.

Having a speedy eSATA external hard drive also helps reinstall windows (if needed) very quickly
