Vista X64
Can someone fill me in on it. What's so great about it compared to 32 bit vista? Pro's? Con's? Don't even mention XP.

Vista gives you the ability to run up to 16 gigs of ram while 32 only lets you use up to 3gigs so if you have 4 gigs of ram...only 3 gigs of it is being used if you are running 32.

A 32-bit system can in fact address 4 GB of RAM - not 3 GB. That 4 does include RAM and other memory so many people only get to use 3 GB as the poster above stated.
Does anybody know if ReadyBoost RAM is used outside that normal 4 GB limit? I'm assuming so as Microsoft is recommending a 3:1 ReadyBoost to conventional RAM ratio and it's hard to imagine anyone using 1 GB of RAM today. ReadyBoost isn't as fast as RAM but at the same time it's no where as slow as hard drive. With USB thumb sticks so darn cheap why not? I'm putting together a pretty nice computer over the last week or so and bought Vista to install. I have a disk with both 32-bit and 64-bit and will go with 32-bit. There's not that many applications out there that need it and I'm almost certain that I'll be connecting devices without 64-bit drivers. I was tempted to use an SSD hard drive but declined - may be next year when I go 64-bit.

64 bit optimized code is also faster than 32 bit. Dont worry about 64 bit unless you have an uber machine.

Reason i ask is because i'm going to be ordering a new system within the next few days. How much better is 8 gigs of memory compared to 4?

I'm running Vista 64 now after being on XP Pro 32 for years.
I'm VERY happy with it. The only thing that can be a pain in the ass is their driver certificate enforcement, but there's ways to get around it. I had to do a bunch of crap to get PeerGuardian working again... other than that it's great. I would make an effort beforehand to check 64 bit driver availability for your hardware, though. You want to run as much as you can on the native architecture. |

The amount of RAM depends on what you're planning to use the computer for. For normal conventional use, anything over 4GB is overkill because you won't ever get close to using that amount of RAM. So no real benefit or noticeable performance gain.
Graphics design, servers, CAD, sure. But browsing the web, email, Office, you probably don't even need over 2GB. Gaming is fine w/ 2GB as well, have yet to run out when i had 2GB.

64 bit can address 16 exabytes of ram, or well 17 billion gigs.... 32 bit can address 4....gigs....
