It is more than sufficient.
Although you should buy a Lenovo instead

Should be fine.
I use an older core2 duo at work for visual studio stuff and it does **ok** I'd rather have more RAM than 2GB. 4 should be okay with Vista.

Last week I bought an XPS M1730...I'm in heaven. I highly recommend it if you game or work in web development / systems administration. The screen is phenomenal.

Personally, I would stay away from Gateway laptops. I've worked on a couple, be it bad luck, all of them have had extremely weak monitors, and the hard drives have died within 2 years. The name and symbol represent crap to me now. That is a good price though.
As far as the insides go, that would be fine for software developing. (I'm assuming coding and debugging). You could even "downgrade" if your simply coding.

Anybody have any thoughts on Sony laptops. They have a pretty good sale going on right now.

I use a sony vaio, been great for the last few years, I don't like gateway. Acer has been ok too.
The OP's posted laptop has power, and as a side note, if your car is lowered you can use it to help get up on a ramp.

I would stay away from dell, I've never been fond of them, I've used compaq and HP through college with a computer engineering degree, just ensured I had a good dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram and I had no issues, this included programming in assembly, vhdl, verilog, c, etc...
What type of software development will you be doing? Do you know what compiler you'll be using (or what program you'll be using, ex. NetBeans, CodeWarrior, Visual Studio...) |
