Build-Log - davids's watercooled system

This thread is to replace:
New Computer - It has begun

I started in on what was going to be a new computer only to find out that I had already made a mistake. After looking into cases for a month or two I picked out the Gigabyte 3D Mercury only to find out **after purchase** that the water cooling system, as nice as the idea was from Gigabyte, was not strong enough to cool both my CPU and GPU blocks.

I'm sending the case back and going to start in on this the right way and build this system better then I could in that other case as well as save some money.

System Specifications
- AMD Phenom 9950 BE
- ASUS M3a32-MVP Motherboard (Can support up to 4 Video cards)
- 2x VisionTek HD 4850
- 4x 2GB Corsair 1066 Ram
- Western Digital Velociraptor (new OS Drive)
Newegg wish list.

I will be re-using components from my existing computer:
- PCP&C 700W Power Supply
- Plextor DVD Burner
- 4x Seagate SATA 3G hard drives (will all become data drives)

Cooling Goals
Overclock the 9950 to 3.5GHZ
Overclock the 4850's to 750mhz or higher.
Stability at the above speeds
Silence

Cooling Components
This section will be updated once I've got the parts nailed down.

Status:
  1. Case Selection..............Done
  2. Cooling Parts Selection
  3. Fabrication & Testing
  4. Hardware Installation
  5. Benchmarking

The Case:
The case selected for the build in the Silversone TJ07, which is a full tower with lots of room for expansion. The main reason for purchasing the case is that it contains good placement of fan vents which will be converted to radiator vents. In addition, I've found it is becoming more popular for water-cooled setups, simply because you have a good amount of room to work with. This will greatly reduce the amount of fabrication needed to install the water components.

I have been doing some research on the cases and looking over some experiences people have had and the one that sticks out happens to be the Silverstone TJ10.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7166/cst-675/Silverstone_Temjin_TJ10_ESA_Edition_Tower_Case_w_Window_Blac k_SST-TJ10B-WESA.html?tl=g1c299s736

My main concern now is completely on how many radiators I will run. If I can pack a triple and a double into it, then it seems like a logical way to go. But, I have a feeling that space could limit me here.

The Lian LI PC-201A is another one that I can see with some potential. It also looks like there is more room but it would take more fab work along the top.

Cheaper @ $259

Best of luck David.

Personally, I'd go with whichever case has the best efficient room with the least necessary modifications.

Thanks Ben,
That's what I am really trying to do. I'm back at the drawing board. I'd like to take the path of needing the least fabing to make it work. There are a whole host of parts that I need and I may need to get the radiator first to try it out.

There might even be a case I can run dual-triples along the bottom.

Take this case for instance.

If I re-locate the hard drive bays in the bottom to the 5 1/2 bays up top, I can possibly fit 2 radiators on their sides along the bottom.

Are you looking just for a case that can fit your own coolers?

I'm assuming you want a full tower, so you can fit dual coolers in the case, correct?

I've been searching a little, and came up with this, but don't know if it's what you're looking for.

Ben, that's a great looking case but the problem I see with that is it is the same thing as the Gigabyte case, which I am in the process of sending back. It's already pre-configured.

^^ Nice!

Ooo, so you need a large roomy case that not only looks good but has enough room for dual coolers and not preconfigured, etc. I gotcha now. I'll do some searching and see if I could help you at all.

Ben the cooler master could work but I like the layout of the TJ07 a lot better. I can do 2 dual-rad's in it.

So, I also just mocked up a cooling design. Need to think about this for a little bit while I order the parts.

I would get a 3 pot thermochill rad with large tubing and mount it outside the case. For example I have mine attached to the side of my desk. All that in a case FTL. Too much ambient heat and weird air flow for non air cooled components.

+1

Mine's outside too, which works great because it doesn't require any active radiator cooling. It's not much trouble at all to move the computer, if that's your worry...you just get some one-way flow connectors for your install, and then you can disconnect them without draining the system.

I do not want to mount it outside of the case. I want all components inside the case.
