TV GURUS, Samsung or Sony ???

i'm upgrading my tv to a 46 inch LCD. I narrowed it down to a sony or samsung. My choices are in the links below. All i need is 3 HDMI hook ups and there are three things that i need but not sure what to look for.

1. I will be watching Blu ray movies on my PS3 so i want very good picture.

2. I will be playing xbox360 and ps3 and hope that both will look good and be reliable.

3. I want normal television to look good as well, not crappy like some of the cheaper LCDs out there.

My friends keep telling me to buy a tv with a high resolution ratio but really don't know anything about that. The samsung has a very high resolution compared to the Sony so i'm not sure if Sony is jusgt an expensive brand or have extra features that make it more expensive. Some insight and tips would help me greatly. Thanks guys.

I cannot tell you anything about the processors, refresh rates, etc... of each of those LCDs, but I can tell you that I purchased the 42in version of that Samsung and have been very pleased with it. I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI and my 360 with the VGA and both look amazing.

The contrast ratios used can be calculated different between companies.

Personally, I'd opt for the Samsung.

Here's some specs for ya SuperBlack.

Sony: http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/...t=product_tab/

Do yourself a favor and get the Samsung LN46A650. It's basically the higher series from what you are looking at. Has higher contrast ratio 50,000:1, has 120hz refresh rate, and 4ms response time.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1202649765246

It's $19XX at best buy, but at Amazon.com it's $1679 currently with free white glove shipping and no tax to most states.

After you buy it, let me know how you like it. I plan on getting the same tv, just no funds right now.

can you explain what the refresh rate is? Seems to have very high reviews on it though. And that's a great price from amazon.

Refresh rate is how fast the picture on the screen is updated. With a slower refresh rate, fast-action movie sequences, sports events, etc will appear jerky.

Try reading some. This site has great information It's good to be an informed buyer.

Go samsung. I was about to buy the ln52a750, but they are about to come out with the 850 and 860(same as 850 but blue). The 650 and 750 are sweet, same picture but 750 has more interactive features. I said forget it and I bought the 55" 950! Badass tv. LED back lit 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio

Watch out for the contrast ratio though. Dynamic is always a higher number than the static, almost double. so the 650 and 750 may have a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast but a little less static contrast.

Best advice, pick out the TV that looks best to you.

I got a 52" samsung 750 not to long ago that I'm very happy with. It's basically the same as the 650, but has a better looking bezel and better in-built speakers.

The 650 is a good buy, but check out AVSforum as some have had issues with their 650s.

And wow, the 850s are out already.....that was fast. The 750s were basically brand new when I picked it up a few months ago.

I wouldn't put to much weight into these contrast ratios. The higher end sonys are very nice and quite comparable to the samsung, but from my layman eyes, I thought the samsung was the best LCD out. Either way, these brands have the best LCDs on the market. I actually might have gotten the sony, but the sony XBRs were a bit more expensive from what I remember.

In your price range, you should also consider a panasonic or maybe a samsung plasma. Many will argue that plasmas will offer superior picture quality to LCDs.

I ended up buying a plasma when I was shopping around for that very reason. Plasmas have better black rendering and in dark/low-light scenes will show more detail. They also have more realistic looking picture. LCDs tend to be bright, with very vibrant colors. Plasmas have more natural colors.

Plasmas use more electricity, so they will cost more to use, but that is probably marginal. Plasmas also offer a wider viewing angle, but are more susceptible to reflections than an LCD. If the room is bright, or has a lot of windows, it may not be the best option.

Also, plasmas will appear smoother in fast action sequences simply due to the nature of LCDs. Also, given two TVs of the same size screen, the plasma will probably be cheaper, as well as easier to find in larger sizes.

All these things were influences for me to buy plasma when I bought my TV a year ago. Since then, LCDs have come a long way and some of the things may not be as big of a concern, or not at all, but it's worth checking into.

Both of these sites have good information.

www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com
www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com

As someone mentioned before, www.avsforum.com is a good resource as well.

Incorrect generalization that's about two years too late.

The only way to compare the two presently is on a case-by-case basis. LCD technology has matured quite a bit.

I was just relaying information I remembered from my research as points of comparison that would be worth checking into for a more knowledgeable comparison. I'm sure things are different now, but I haven't stayed on top of it.
