(Hope this doesn't violate the forum rules...)
If you've got an iPhone 3G, you can earn a little money by being a war driver w/your iPhone 3G. I stumbled across Navizon recently while looking for something else. You can paid $10 for every 10,000 points but if you're using Navizon Lite, you can only get paid for one reward unless you upgrade to the full version. See http://www.navizon.com/navizon_rewards.asp for how it works. You just need to start the app on your iPhone 3G while driving around. I think you also need to turn on WiFi first. That's it. You don't need to do anything else. If you do sign up, when creating an account, I'd appreciate it if you use my referral link: http://my.navizon.com/Webapps/UserAd...e=5859595F5856 or simply my referral code 5859595F5856. The Navizon apps are in the iTunes app store. It does drain a fair amount of power so I wouldn't use it for long periods of time unless you have something to power your iPhone 3G in the car. It would be perfect for you if you drive all day on different routes every day (e.g. taxi drivers, delivery people), esp. if you go through densely populated areas.

Highly illegal though.....jumping onto someones unprotected wireless access point without their permission will land you in legal troubles if caught.

last I heard if the network was unprotected i.e. no encryption you can't go to jail for using it. Now if it does have encryption its entirely different.

That's what I've always heard as well. As long as its an open network nothing illegal about it. Now if you have to hack a password, well then that's pretty obvious.

Not correct, but war driving is a bit different. You aren't actually connecting to the network you are listening for routers that are broadcasting their networks, aka SSID broadcast.

If it were illegal, competitors like Skyhook would be breaking the law by hiring war drivers. See http://www.skyhookwireless.com/careers/drivers.php and http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/faq.php. Skyhook provides the data that's used by the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (see http://www.skyhookwireless.com/inaction/apple.php). You can watch this story about a war driver hired by Skyhook Wireless and the technology at http://www.technowtv.com/?cat=999194...34#videoplayer.
