Anyway, so I'm here in Afghan, hating this contract more than my previous ones because the company I'm with kinda sucks. /rant. Now that I've got that out of the way..
Ive been looking at iphones and ipod touches and I'm at a loss for which to get. I know and Iphone can be hacked as well as a touch. I have a few problems,
A. I want a 32gig 3GS. I may as well get the best right? However, I dont know of any place that sells the 3gs by itself without wanting a cell contract.
B. I'm not sure if I need to get an Iphone regardless. The touch doesnt have a camera which I think would be a nice bonus, considering I don't have one this time around and I'd like to get some pics because after this contract, I'm not ever coming back to this **** hole. Plus the compass/gps thing seems like it would be nice, which isnt on the touch.
So my question is, particularly for all you iphone/touch hacker/crackers/jailbreakers, should I just bite the bullet and get the iphone, jailbreak it and put in a local SIM? Can I still use the app store that way? Or should I get a touch, set up the skype version and just not worry about the lack of camera and gps? My internets limited over here so I dont have much time or ability to research this stuff on my own. If I decide to go Iphone, where would I buy a 3gs without a contract? At the moment, I have a bead on an ipod touch 32gig for about 350.

Well,
- you can get an unlocked 3GS phone.
- they play games really great to help you pass the time.
- they are *REALLY* bright though so be careful at night if you are out in the field.
- You should be able to get a local SIM card, but data coverage is likely to be really SPOTTY.
If you purchase one and ship it to me, PM me and we'll work out to where I can load it up with a bunch of games and mp3, movies for you and send it over to you.
Thanks for the help everyone, at this point, I'm thinking I'll wait until the new Itouch comes out in September. Its supposed to have all the capabilities of an iphone, without the cell part. Which means not having to commit to ATT.
Yes. They are scalpers all over craigslist selling unlock phone like it's damn gold.
I would just buy directly from ATT without contract like mention above and then jailbreak it. Shouldn't be hard to do. Check out modmyi.com which is a dedicated forums to the iphones.
