i have a question... I am trying to set up my work email in outlook 2007.
it is pretty easy as i have done this many times... however my job does not provide me with an Outgoing mail server (SMTP).
this is what it says on our tech-support website.
Quote:
Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
Contact your Internet Service Provider for instructions on what to enter for your Outgoing Mail Server. It will probably be something similar to: mail.(your ISP address).com. We do not provide an outgoing mail server.
i was given an SMTP server for our office but it will not work outside of our office. is there a universal SMTP that i can use? i read online that i can use gmail, but it changes the "From" in an email which is not acceptable when communicating with clients.
i am very rarely in the office and need to be able to send work emails from anywhere.
any suggestions?
also i do have a blackberry which works perfectly with my work email. can use the same outgoing mail server as my blackberry?
and web-mail is out of the question.
thanks in advance

you can use your gmail outgoing server and set the reply-to field in the general tab of the 'more settings' button on the main account settings screen as your actual work e-mail address.
people will still see your gmail address but when they reply it will go to your work email.
also, you have to make sure you use correct credentials (gmail log in information) in the outgoing server section of more settings

Many ISPs (MSN, Earthlink, Verizon, Cox, etc) do not allow their customers to use any Outgoing Mailserver except their own. Contact your ISP to find out. If it's blocked then you have no choice but to use your ISP for any outgoing mail. If it's not blocked then I would suggest trying any free service like stated.
Can't you just set it up as exchange at home? Or are you trying to get around that?
how do i do this?
i am a real estate broker so i can change my email address. i just dont want it to be gmail. i am purchasing a domain name for my website from godaddy in a few days. can i just have my email be my name@my domain name.com with godaddy?

Having your own personal exchange server is overkill for you and time consuming to configure it correctly.
Don't go with godaddy unless you can deal with the cpanel to manage your settings. All my clients complain at how difficult the layout is and how hard it is to get anything done. I'm with dreamhost and been with them for about 8 years. I have never had any problem and the cpanel is n00b friendly. All my clients are now with dreamhost because it's easy to deal with.
You can also check your e-mail from any computer via webmail.
But you will run into problems if your ISP is blocking port 25. You can always configure outlook as IMAP instead to bypass port 25 or use your ISP SMT Address.
If you need help let me know.
Did you try using your ISP SMTP address to see if it would work for you?
What about VPN access to your work network? Do they offer it?

Sugarspun, if you're going to buy a domain with email service, the plan you purchase should come with smtp services.
I've personally used yahoo as my bobo domain provider simply because they don't register every single domain I search for like godaddy and networksolutions does. There's hundreds of hosts out there- I'm sure everyone has their own special one.
As mentioned above, gmail will allow you to use their smtp service if you register an account with them. You can use it no matter what email you're sending from, but, say if your current email address is sugar@broker.com, the header when you send from gmail will say the email is from "sugar@broker.com via sugar@gmail.com". It's goofy but that's the tradeoff you get for using gmail's smtp services to send mail out from another account.
